Mold Cleaning Solutions:
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says damp buildings where mold can grow will often lead to respiratory symptoms, asthma problems, infections, bronchitis, and others.
The worst part is, over 90% of the mold in a building may not even be visible.
Mold can, and does, hide in many places such as behind wallpaper or underneath the carpet. Ventilation ducts in your HVAC system and air conditioning units are also known as hiding places for mold.
For these reasons, you need a fogger than can reach areas the mold is and kill it. We’re dedicated to helping you find the best one for your needs, so let’s get started.
What Are Mold Foggers?
Mold foggers are devices that atomize mold remover or cleaning solutions by creating droplet sizes that are one to 100 microns in size.
The smaller the size of the droplet, the longer they will remain in the air and the better the coverage.
Smaller droplets will float in the air, drifting into the hidden places where mold spores are known to flourish.
A droplet that is 40 microns in size will settle to the ground much faster than a droplet that is four microns in size, thus reducing the coverage area.
A fogger is not a sprayer, although they are often called sprayers. A sprayer is a device for delivers pesticides or other liquids to a specific target.
A fogger is designed to create a mist or fog that covers everything in a room, attic, crawl space, or an entire house.
How Do Mold Foggers Work?
Ultra Low Volume (ULV) sprayers use a high-pressure pump in the 1000-3000 psi range, along with an atomizing nozzle, to produce microscopic droplets. The resulting fog is blown out the nozzle, often at speeds as high as 100 mph.
Most of the droplets created by these cold foggers, as they’re known, are in the five-micron range.
At the size, they will float in the air for hours. This is what ensures good coverage over large areas as well as penetration into tiny cracks and crevices where mold may be hiding.
A mold control fogger will remove mold and mildew from drywall, as well as prevent mold from regrowing. On most of them, the flow rate can be adjusted depending on the size of the droplets you want to achieve.
Mold control foggers can be handheld, static, or backpacks.
- Static foggers are set in a room then switched on and allowed to run unsupervised until the target area has been thoroughly fogged.
- Handheld foggers are about the same physical size as static foggers but are intended to be used manually. You’ll need a full respirator face mask when you’re using one of them.
- Backpack foggers are worn on your back, carry 3-4 gallons of liquid, and use a gasoline-powered engine to run the sprayer. Backpack foggers are normally used outside but they work just as well inside too. If you’re using one inside, you’ll need to wear a respirator.
How Do You Use A Mold Fogger?
A mold fogger is a great product for getting rid of black mold but you should be aware it’s not the only tool you’ll need and fogging isn’t the only thing you’ll have to do to get rid of your mold problem.
The EPA recommends fixing leaks that may be providing moisture for mold, scrubbing off hard surfaces with detergent or bleach and drying them completely before fogging. If the surface is too porous, you may have to remove it.
Some items in your house such as carpets, painting, and works of art may require the services of a special remediation company to come in and clean them.
Most of the pre-fogging cleaning and disposal can be done as a DIY project. The researchers at the University of Georgia recommend using chemical resistant gloves and eye protection goggles without side vents to shield against splashes.

Once all of the preparation work is done, then you can use the fogger.
Fill the tank with the clean solution of your choice (we have two recommendations) and follow the directions to set the nozzle and droplet size.
Smaller droplets should be used in areas with many cracks and crevices. In large open areas, you can use larger droplets.
Static foggers can set in the middle of the area to be fogged and switched on. Leave the area and close it off while the fogger is running.
When the fogging is completed, but before the cleaning solution tank runs dry, return to the area and turn off the fogger.
Open all the windows and doors, as well as any other openings that are available, and let the area clear. It may take half-an-hour to an hour for the air to clear and the mist to dry.
Are Mold Foggers Safe Around My Pets And Children?
No. Keep children and pets well away from any area where foggers are being used.
After the fogging operation is complete, keep them away for another three to four hours to ensure all the aerial residue is gone.
