Top 6 Best Moth Traps (2021 Review)

If you have moths flying around in your house, there are two broad categories they could fall into; pantry moths and clothing moths.

Among the pantry moths, the most common is the Indian Meal Moth, Plodia interpunctella. They attack cereal products, flour, rice, cornmeal, nuts, candy, and other dry goods.

The most common clothing moth is the Brown House Moth, Hofmannophila pseudospretella. They attack cashmere, cotton, and wool clothing of all kinds.

What Are Moth Traps?

A moth trap – for clothes moths or food moths – utilizes chemical lures that are synthetic copies of the chemicals, called pheromones, that females emit to attract males for mating. This means first of all that only male moths will be caught in these traps.

Along with the pheromone lure, the trap is coated with an adhesive to capture male moths when they land on it.

The adhesive is normally an odorless glue designed not to dry out, thus ensuring it remains sticky for several months at a time.

How Do Moth Traps Work?

The pheromone scent emitted by the trap lures males of the species with the promise of mating with a female. The odor of the pheromone is generally undetectable by human senses, thus many traps claim to be odorless. Males moths can easily detect the odor.

Because the pheromones are scent molecules, they drift with the wind. Outside, the pheromones will attract many males from the downwind side of the trap, and few or none from the upwind side.

Inside, the pheromone scent will drift outward in a gradually expanding sphere until it becomes too tenuous to be detected. Most lures are only effective within a seven to a 25-foot radius of the location of the trap.

The traps do not catch female moths or larvae, and it’s the larvae that do most of the damage. Instead, moth traps work by breaking the life cycle of the moths. If all the males are trapped and killed, there won’t be any left to mate with the females.

If mating doesn’t take place, the female won’t be able to lay eggs that will hatch into destructive larvae. Therefore, you need to understand that moth traps work on a long-term basis. There will not be an immediate cessation in the damaging activity.

Are Moth Traps Effective For Catching Moths?

Pheromone moth traps are very effective at catching male moths. The reproductive drive is one of the strongest drives in any species, second only to physical survival. When the males detect the pheromone of a ready female, they zero in on it.

Some customers with a bad moth problem expressed surprise that moths began fluttering around them as soon as they opened the trap or pheromone lure. Many began catching moths within the hour.

How To Use Moth Traps

For food moths, traps should be placed in the pantry or cupboard where the moths have been observed. In a large pantry or kitchen, two more traps might be required. For clothing moths, put the traps in the closet with your clothes.

Check the trap daily. If you count 20 or more moths trapped on it, replace it with a fresh trap. Otherwise, it should be good for 60-90 days.

Are Moth Traps Safe Around My Pets and Children?

These traps are completely non-toxic. They are 100% safe around pets and children. The only caveat is that if children get a hold of the trap, you’re going to have a sticky mess on your hands when they get the glue all over themselves.

The same caution holds true for pets. If the glue gets stuck to their fur, you might have to cut off some of their fur or hair to keep from pulling it out.

How Do You Find the Best Moth Traps?

  • You need to look, first and foremost, for traps that are individually sealed airtight with plastic or foil. If the pheromone lure is separate from the trap, it needs to be sealed in an airtight package by itself.
  • Look for traps that have a thin plastic film covering the glue to keep it from drying out while it’s on the store shelves.
  • Finally, look for a trap that is easy to use. If it takes more than two or three steps to get the trap ready for use, it’s not designed properly. A trap that is badly designed in one aspect, is probably badly designed in another one as well. Stay away from them.
