Top 8 Best Scorpion Killer Sprays (**2021 Review**)

Scorpions have a reputation of being mean, nasty, and scary. Their curved tail, arched up over their back, ready to strike, certainly adds to the image.

But are they really that bad?

While a scorpion would prefer to run from people rather than sting them, there are 20-25 species that can deliver fatal blows to humans.

What Are Scorpion Killer Sprays?

In a nutshell, scorpion killer sprays are pesticides formulated to overcome scorpion’s size and shell thickness that protects them from normal pesticides. Scorpions aren’t immune to insecticides, but it takes stronger chemicals to get through their defenses.

Because of their size and the thickness of their shells, the pesticides to kill them have to be stronger and more toxic than ordinary pesticides. This means many of the insect sprays you see on the market won’t be able to hurt them.

You need to use pesticides that are designed for killing scorpions.

How Do Scorpion Killer Sprays Work?

An insecticide spray kills scorpions or black widow spiders or anything else by being absorbed into their system. From there, the chemical may attack the sodium channels in the central nervous system or interfere with their respiration.

The active ingredient in each pesticide works differently.

How Do You Find The Best Scorpion Killer Sprays?

Reading this article is a place to start. Here at Pest Strategies we have people who have been licensed pest control technicians for 15, 20, 25 years – or more. Those years of work under real-world conditions has given us a depth of experience other sites can’t match.

We’ll give you the benefit of our hands-on experience using these pesticides and make recommendations based on that experience. We’ll steer you only toward the insecticides that work specific to handling scorpions.

Are Scorpion Killer Sprays Effective?

If they’re used properly, yes. Like most insecticides, we advise seeking professional help. Usually just a call away after submitting your inquire here, pest control professionals will ensure that proper oversight is taken when applying sprays that work for scorpion defense.

If looking to solve the issue oneself, you may find that scorpions may be entering your house because they’re trying to escape unusually hot or dry conditions outside

Cracks and crevices around windows and doors are the primary path by which they find an entrance into homes and buildings. Once inside, they will be drawn to sources of water such as leaky pipes and areas of high humidity and condensation.

Scorpions glow brightly when exposed to a UV black light. Since they are nocturnal, a good way to find them at night is with a black light flashlight. Scorpions have excellent hearing but very poor eyesight, so using the black light won’t alert them to your presence.

You can then use one of the suggested sprays from our review list below to take care of your scorpion problem!

How To Use A Scorpion Killer Spray

Now that you know something about scorpions, let’s put that knowledge to use. They’ll most likely be found at night when you turn on the light or use the black light. During the day, it will rare to see them out in the open.

Your pest control efforts should focus on the cracks and crevices around the baseboards, windows, and doors. Pay attention to dark areas under sinks, especially those with leaks. Closets full of shoes, bookcases with low clearance under them, and piles of clothes are some places where they might be hiding.

“Hiding” is the operative word. Scorpions in the house aren’t living there or trying to build a nest. They are refugees from the weather outside. Keep this in mind as you put on your exterminator. Look for hiding places, not nests.

Spray your scorpion insecticide around those areas just before retiring at night to ensure it’s at its strongest when they come out later that night. Place scorpion traps near water sources, and use insecticide dust or diatomaceous earth in crevice treatments.

Scorpion traps are just sticky traps, a piece of cardboard with glue on one side. If the glue gets wet it will begin losing its strength. When you’re putting out a glue board, be sure to place it where it won’t get wet.

Are Scorpion Killer Sprays Safe Around My Pets And Children?

No. As we mentioned earlier, anything that kills scorpions has to be stronger than normal bug spray because of their size and the strength of their shell. This means the best scorpion killer will be strong enough to be toxic to pets and small children.

Warning

Scorpion killer sprays are not safe around pets and children. Anything that kills scorpions has to be stronger than normal bug spray, and is therefore unsafe for kids and pets.

To put it another way, if it’s not strong enough to be dangerous to children and pets, it’s not strong enough to kill scorpions. If you have infestations of scorpions, any spray strong enough to kill them will be hazardous to your children and pets. That’s the trade-off.

Best Scorpion Killer Sprays Reviewed

  • Tremendous power
  • 90-day residual impact
  • Professional pesticide

Cy-Kick uses Cyfluthrin as the active ingredient to kill scorpions, earwigs, centipedes, spiders, silverfish, cockroaches and crawling insects of many other kinds. It comes in a 16-ounce bottle of concentrate that can be used to make 16-20 gallons of full strength pesticide.

You’ll need a 1-gallon pump-up sprayer to mix it in and spray it with. This scorpion killer is very strong and shouldn’t be allowed to contact your bare skin when it is wet. It’s labeled for both indoor and outdoor use so you can get scorpions before they enter your house.

This scorpion spray has a long-term residual impact for up to 90 days so it will keep on killing scorpions long after you’ve sprayed it. Cy-kick is a professional pesticide.

Pros

  • Kills many different insects
  • Makes 16-20 gallons of pesticide
  • Inside and outside use

Cons

  • Toxic when wet
  • Powerful ingredients for the control of scorpions and other pests
  • Microencapsulated for long-term management of a wide range of pests
  • Variable release technology for broader coverage

One of the newcomers to the field of scorpion control is CSI. Its Cyzmic CS Controlled Release Insecticide concentrate utilizes the latest technology to fight pests.

It starts with the most recognized scorpion-killing ingredient, lambda-cyhalothrin, a very powerful synthetic pyrethrin. It then micro-encapsulates it for timed-controlled release.

But what makes Cyzmic CS different is its variable capsule release technology. It allows some capsules to release right away for maximum knockdown power. Then, the remaining encapsulated pyrethrins are released over time to offer exceptional long-term control.

Cyzmic CS is labeled for scorpions and other arachnids. And it is useful as a knockdown treatment or a long-term solution for bed bugs, cockroaches, and fleas.

Pros

  • Powerful ingredients for the control of scorpions and other pests
  • Microencapsulated for long-term management of a wide range of pests
  • Variable release technology for broader coverage

Cons

  • Costs considerably more than competing brands
  • May not be as effective on fleas or ticks so, follow-up treatments may be required
  • May cause clogging of equipment
  • Powerful pesticide
  • Lasts for nine months
  • Professional pesticide

The active ingredient in this dry pesticide is Deltamethrin, a man-made pyrethroid. The dust is very fine, like baby powder or talcum powder. When it is used in a bulb duster, it comes out as a fine cloud of dust.

Avoid getting this in your nose, mouth, or eyes when you’re using it – it tastes nasty. Put the tip of the nozzle directly against any small crack or crevice and give the duster a quick squeeze. It will send a puff of dust deep into it where scorpions like to hide.

Pros

  • Kills a wide range of insects
  • Penetrates deep into cracks and crevices
  • Won’t dissolve in water

Cons

  • Irritating to eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Tastes nasty
  • This product lasts for 90 days.
  • LambdaStar has a slow-release formula for residual effects.
  • This product has a low rate of irritation, making it safer to use.

One of the significant challenges that a person will deal with when it comes to getting rid of a scorpion problem or preventing a scorpion problem is that a female scorpion carries her young on her back.

This situation means if she is able to get inside your house and the young scatter, you are going to need a product that not only allows you to use it outside but inside the home to protect you on all fronts.

Secondly, you will want something that has lasting power. Not only do you have better things to do with your time than spray the perimeter and floorboards of your home every month, but if a product only kills scorpions when it is first put down, that doesn’t do anything for future home invaders that will be heading your way.

LambdaStar will last up to 90 days inside and outside of your home; it is a microcapsule formula, so it will continue to release its pesticide over those 90 days giving it the residual effects you are going to need, and it has a low potential of causing irritation to the applicator.

Pros

  • This product lasts for 90 days.
  • LambdaStar has a slow-release formula for residual effects.
  • This product has a low rate of irritation, making it safer to use.

Cons

  • You will need a sprayer to apply it correctly.
  • Safe around children and pets, when applied correctly
  • Naturally occurring material won't harm the environment
  • Especially effective for scorpions

Diatomaceous earth is a naturally-occurring, white powder substance consisting of fossilized organisms. It is usually mined at the bottom of dry lake beds. And it has been used for over a century as a safe way to eliminate pests.

Harris Diatomaceous Earth works as a desiccant to dehydrate scorpions so that their reproductive cycles are eliminated. It also works on other pests such as cockroaches, bed bugs, and fleas.

Harris Diatomaceous Earth comes with a unique bellows duster for easy application. Open the lid and fill about halfway. It is best to use the duster for crack and crevice treatments.

And even though diatomaceous earth is naturally-derived, it is essential to wear an OSHA-approved respirator while applying this insecticide.

Pros

  • Safe around children and pets, when applied correctly
  • Naturally occurring material won't harm the environment
  • Especially effective for scorpions
  • Comes with a duster making it an excellent value

Cons

  • Slow-acting, could take several weeks to see results
  • Over-application could cause it not to work
  • Using water to clean it off may cause it to turn to clay
  • Quick knockdown
  • 90-day residual impact
  • Professional pesticide

Demand CS uses lambda-cyhalothrin as the active ingredient. It has a long-term residual impact for up to 90 days on over 30 different insects in addition to scorpions and spiders. If you live in New York state though, you won’t be able to buy it there.

It has a fast knockdown for quick results. Against scorpions, it’s a little bit slower but it still kills them. You’ll need to mix it with water in a 1-gallon pump-up sprayer to use it. Each 8-ounce bottle will make 8-10 gallons of pesticide.

Pros

  • Kills 30 different pests

Cons

  • Can’t be used in NY
  • No mixing required
  • Gets into tiny cracks
  • Professional pesticide

An aerosol-spray doesn’t have to be mixed and is ready to use the moment you get it. Terro Scorpion Killer Spray uses Prallethrin as the active ingredient. It has a built-in precision spray nozzle for treating tiny cracks and crevices.

The advantage with Terro is the fast knockdown. The six week residual impact isn’t as long-lasting as other pesticides but the quick action makes up for it. This is a good pesticide to use in conjunction with a long-term residual pesticide.

Pros

  • Fast knockdown
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Limited residual impact
  • Easy to use
  • Very cheap
  • Excellent monitoring devices

Glue traps, sticky board, insect monitors; whatever you call them, they have a long and storied history in the field of pest control. They’re useful in a wide variety of ways and places. Although they certainly catch and kill bugs, the main use for them is as a monitoring device.

Place these glue traps in areas where you suspect scorpions are hiding. Place them near wet areas, leaks, or under bookcases and furniture. Check them daily. If you find a scorpion in one of them, then you know they are in your house and you can bring out the pesticides to deal with them.

Pros

  • They can be put almost anywhere

Cons

  • They lose stickiness when wet

Final Thoughts On Scorpion Killer Sprays

While Cy-Kick is the best scorpion killer, we always use more than one insecticide to make sure we kill them. Add Delta Dust or Diatomaceous Earth as a crevice treatment to get the areas the spray nozzle can’t reach.

We also like to use the scorpion traps as monitoring devices. If none of them catch any scorpions after two or three weeks, that will be confirmation that you succeeded in getting rid of your scorpion problem.
