What Are Hammocks With Mosquito Nets?

Hammocks come in all shapes and sizes, from tiny hammocks for your children to play or sleep in, to huge double-wide hammocks for you and your spouse to snuggle up together, sipping tall drinks with umbrellas in them and watching the sunset.

Hammocks are only used in warm weather though, and those temperatures only come in the spring and summer when mosquitoes are certain to abound. They’re going to be looking for a fresh smorgasbord to dine on and they think you’re it.

A hammock with a mosquito net solves that problem by including a fine mesh net to cover you while you’re reclining. The nets are usually attached to the hammock and pulled up like a tent to provide room inside for you to move around.

If you add a separate rain fly suspended over your hammock, you can dispense with a regular tent during warm weather and go camping with just a hammock and a rain fly. One man who did just that posted his experience online in this YouTube video.

Are There Different Types of Hammocks With Mosquito Nets?

Yes, there are different types of hammocks with mosquito nets.

  • On some hammocks, the mosquito net is permanently attached to the hammock. Those hammocks can include separate ropes to lift the net or use flexible rods to create U-shape to do the same thing.

On those hammocks, if you want to use the hammock without the mosquito net, they are almost always reversible. Just turn the hammock over when you set it up and you can use it without the mosquito net.

  • The second type of hammocks with mosquito nets includes a net but it isn’t permanently attached. Instead, it attaches via a zipper. This type assumes you’ll mainly be using the hammock without a net or you live in an area without many mosquitoes.

If you decide to use the mosquito net, you’ll have to spread the hammock out on the ground and attach it with the zipper. Once it’s attached you can hang the hammock and the net the way you normally would.

Some people have tried to attach the net after the hammock has already been hung but the wind has a tendency to blow things around while you’re working, especially the lightweight net. Attaching the mosquito before hanging the hammock is easier.

How Do Hammocks With Mosquito Nets Work?

Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water. When the eggs hatch, the larvae swim around eating bacteria and pond scum (algae) until they’re finally ready to emerge as flying mosquitoes.

The males feed on nectar from flowers and fruit. After mating, they die.

The females need protein provided by mammal blood before they can produce and lay their eggs. They home in on the heat from your face, ears, and head.

The CO2 in your exhaled breath also signals to them the presence of a mammal they can feed on.

That’s why you always hear mosquitoes whining around your face and ears. Those are the target areas generating the most heat and CO2.

did you know best hammock with mosquito net fact

When they detect the heat and CO2, they head straight for it.

The underside of a hammock creates a solid barrier between you and them, as well as helping to mask your body heat. The net doesn’t mask anything but the holes in the fine mesh are too small for mosquitoes to penetrate, creating a barrier between you and them.

Mosquitoes have to feed frequently, especially when they’re laying their eggs. They need to rapidly ingest fresh blood.

If they can’t reach you, they’ll very quickly turn their attention to other mammals – and yes, mosquitoes do feed on animals and pets.

Our Reviews Of The Best Hammocks With Mosquito Nets

  • Available in Single or Double sizes
  • High-quality 210T parachute nylon
  • 100% Lifetime Guarantee

These hammocks come in two sizes and seven different colors. The hammock includes flat nylon straps with built-in loops and aviation aluminum-alloy carabiners.

The two sizes are single and double, with a 500 pound and 600-pound capacity respectively.

It’s made from high-quality 210T parachute nylon, the same kind used by skydivers, and comes with a 100% Lifetime Guarantee from SunYear. It can be used with or without the mosquito net, just flip it over and use the reverse side to dispense with the net.

It weighs under two pounds and comes with a handy carrying bag. If you add a rainfly like this one, you can go camping without a tent.

Pros

  • Available in Single or Double sizes
  • High-quality 210T parachute nylon
  • 100% Lifetime Guarantee
  • Aviation quality aluminum-alloy carabiners
  • Holds up to 600 pounds (double size)
  • Nylon straps include built-in loops

Cons

  • The nylon isn’t ripstop material
  • Made from 210D nylon taffeta ripstop material
  • Heavy-duty triple stitched seams
  • Weighs only 29 ounces

Eagles Nest Outfitters (ENO) adds a 950-square-inch tightly woven mesh net to their high-quality hammock. The mosquito net is permanently attached and has a full-length zipper to make getting in and out super easy and convenient.

It’s made from the best 210D nylon taffeta ripstop material, consisting of nylon threads cross-woven through a taffeta base, creating an interlocking pattern that resists tearing and cutting. Taffeta is commonly made from silk, sometimes polyester.

The material accounts for most of the price of ENO hammocks, but they suffer from one shortcoming that keeps them out of first place; they don’t include any tree straps for hanging. You’ll have to purchase those separately.

Pros

  • Made from 210D nylon taffeta ripstop material
  • Heavy-duty triple stitched seams
  • Weighs only 29 ounces
  • Carrying bag included
  • Aluminum wiregate carabiners

Cons

  • Tree straps aren’t included
  • Extremely easy setup
  • Supports over 770 pounds
  • High-quality 210T parachute nylon

There are some cheaper hammocks on the market but this one combines low price with high quality, a combination that’s hard to beat.

It’s made from high-quality 210T parachute nylon. It’s not ripstop but the manufacturer claims it’s tear-resistant anyway.

It weighs less than two pounds and includes two aluminum stakes, 2 iron carabiners, two nylon tree straps, and a carrying bag. It’s over nine feet long and can support more than 770 pounds.

The manufacturer promises a free replacement for any defective hammock.

The design eliminates the need for extra ropes or ties to support the mosquito net, making this the easiest hammock of all to set up, but the straps aren’t always easy to adjust once it is setup.

Pros

  • Extremely easy setup
  • Supports over 770 pounds
  • High-quality 210T parachute nylon
  • Free replacement for any defective hammock

Cons

  • The straps can be difficult to adjust
  • Stainless steel carabiners
  • Mosquito net attaches with zippers
  • Indoor & outdoor use

This camping hammock is especially noteworthy for its placement of loops on the mosquito net.

An included suspension line goes through the loops and ties to the trees supporting the hammock. This lifts the net up off you and ensures it won’t droop.

The hammock and the mosquito net are both made from high-density polyester. The net is separate but attaches with stainless steel zippers when you want the added protection.

It includes two tree straps, two stainless steel carabiners, and two ropes for the net.

The maximum weight capacity is 440 pounds and it can be used inside or outside. There aren’t any sizes or color options available, but it’s very lightweight and good for backpacking.

Pros

  • Stainless steel carabiners
  • Mosquito net attaches with zippers
  • Indoor & outdoor use

Cons

  • Only one size available
  • 440-pound weight capacity
  • High-quality parachute woven 210T nylon
  • Includes everything needed for setup

This hammock comes with everything you need; four hooks, two solid D-shaped carabiners, two nylon tree straps, and two net ropes. The hooks attach to loops on the net and help hold it up off your face when you’re using the hammock.

The hammock is made of high-quality parachute woven 210T nylon. It comes in light green or dark green, has a 440-pound weight capacity, and a convenient carrying bag. The dacron gauze mosquito net is triple-stitched on the seams for extra durability.

It comes with a 100% lifetime guarantee from Hieha. Unfortunately, you might have to use that guarantee because the gauze netting rips very easily.

Pros

  • 440-pound weight capacity
  • High-quality parachute woven 210T nylon
  • Includes everything needed for setup

Cons

  • The gauze netting rips easily

It comes with tree straps, rope, aviation aluminum-alloy carabiners, and a handy carrying bag, all in a package that weighs less than two pounds. SunYear also provides a 100% Lifetime Guarantee.
