What Are Sprays For Sand Fleas?

Sprays for sand fleas – Siphonaptera (siphon = tube; aptera = wingless) – are one of the most effective means of controlling fleas. There are over 2500 species of fleas in the world, 325 in the continental United States alone.

Without sprays, their numbers would proliferate out of control, perhaps bringing about a resurgence of the Bubonic Plague, AKA, the Black Death, which was carried by fleas biting infected rats then jumping to people and biting them.

did you know sand flea spray fact

Sprays are liquid or aerosol treatments designed to kill fleas either directly or by interfering with their growth patterns, thus preventing future reproduction. They can be concentrates that need to be mixed or premixed sprays that can be used immediately.

Fleas are difficult to kill, as this video makes clear and you need to be extremely aggressive in dealing with them.

What Are The Different Types of Sprays For Sand Fleas?

Sand fleas, Chigoe, are members of the Pulicidae family. They inhabit sandy areas at the beach or in your backyard.

When you or your pets cross the area where they live, they’ll jump on you and hitchhike into your house.

There are sprays for outside and for inside. If you don’t have sandy areas in your yard, it most likely means the fleas jumped onto squirrels or birds visiting a nearby sandy area then rode them to your yard where they jumped off before getting on you.

If that’s the case, you probably don’t need an outside spray. However, there are other fleas that live quite happily in green lawns.

Because fleas are so small, it’s almost impossible to identify which species they are with the naked eye.

However, we’re concentrating on sand fleas here, so unless you’ve got sandy areas in your yard, inside sprays should be all you need.

How Do Sprays For Sand Fleas Work?

The active ingredients in the knockdown sprays typically attack the central nervous system in fleas, interfering with the signals they send. This can cause muscle spasms that prevent breathing or create heart irregularities.

Others, such as IGRs, mimic juvenile growth hormones. They cause young fleas to mature too fast and prevents them from molting. If they can’t molt, they can’t grow and they die.

Other IGRs cause them to mature too slowly and their reproductive systems are hindered. In either case, they’re unable to reproduce. You can think of IGRs as birth control for bugs.

Are Sprays For Sand Fleas Dangerous To Pets or Children?

The only honest answer is yes and no. Once the sprays are dry, they’re not dangerous to pets and most children.

Infants, due to their body-to-weight ratio, may be susceptible if they crawl across a treated area then put their hands in their mouths.

Except for the all-natural sprays based on essential oils, children and pets should be kept away from treated areas until they have completely dried. When they are wet, they can be hazardous.

As long as you exercise a modicum of caution and ordinary common sense, the sprays shouldn’t be a problem for your children or pets.

Our Reviews Of The Best Spray For Sand Fleas

  • Professional Insecticide
  • Has a 90-day residual impact
  • Broad-spectrum kills over 50 pests

Fleas are no joke, and there are many species of fleas such as dog fleas, cat fleas, snow fleas, and even sand fleas. All fleas have one thing in common; they drive us nuts. They don’t care what time of day it is or who you are. They just bite, bite, bite!

Cy-kick CS not only kills adult fleas, but it also kills them in all of their in-between stages due to its ability to last for 90 days after application.

To understand this, you may need to understand the flea life cycle. An adult female flea bites you, lays its eggs, and the eggs hatch into larva, which crawls around until they cocoon up and then turn into an adult flea.

This process, left unchecked, can result in thousands of fleas in less than a few months. Cy-kick CS lasts the entire time of the flea life cycle and kills at all of their life cycles where they are not in an egg or a cocoon.

Cy-Kick CS is odorless and doesn’t stain, which makes it usable indoors, but the best use for it is outside where it can be liberally applied to all the areas where you are having a flea problem.

One downside is that because it’s a concentrate, you will need a hand sprayer to apply it, and because of how strong it is, you should always read the label and wear personal protective gear while using it.

Pros

  • Lasts for 90 days
  • Kills all flea species
  • One container can make 16 gallons of product.

Cons

  • Requires a sprayer to apply correctly.
  • Treats up to 2,625 square feet
  • Easy and ready to use
  • Kills adults fleas for 30 days

This pesticide combines Prallethrin for a fast knockdown to kill adult fleas and Pyriproxyfen, a long-lasting IGR, to prevent them from reproducing when later generations hatch out of their eggs.

It kills adult fleas for up to 30 days after treatment and keeps killing hatching eggs for nearly seven months. One 20-ounce aerosol can will treat up to 2,625 square feet, including fabric furniture, drapes, carpets, and bedding.

It has a fairly strong odor after spraying so you should everyone out of the area for several hours after using it. Once the odor dissipates, it’s safe for you, your children, and pets to re-enter the treated area.

Pros

  • Includes an IGR to prevent reproduction
  • Treats up to 2,625 square feet
  • Easy and ready to use
Kills adults fleas for 30 days
  • Continues killing hatching fleas for seven months

Cons

  • It has a strong odor when used
  • Brand name pesticide
  • Non-staining formula
  • Easy and ready to use

Ortho is a popular and well-known brand name that is trusted by millions. They make pesticides of all kinds and this is one of the least expensive we’ve found on the market.

It has a non-staining formula when used on water-safe fabrics and surfaces.

It comes in a 16-ounce aerosol can that is ready to use as soon as you get it. It has a bit of an odor but it’s not bad.

It has a fast knockdown but very little residual effect to take care of hatching fleas. You’ll have to re-spray to kill them.

This is mainly useful in the beginning stages of an infestation when there aren’t many fleas in your house. If you can catch them early, this is an inexpensive way to get rid of them before they spread.

Pros

  • Brand name pesticide
  • Non-staining formula
  • Easy and ready to use

Cons

  • Has some odor to it
  • Doesn’t have an IGR in it
  • Won’t eliminate heavy infestations
  • All-natural ingredients
  • No harsh chemicals
  • Safe around pets and children

This yard spray doesn’t use any harsh chemicals. It relies on all-natural essential oils.

The active ingredients are cedarwood oil 12.63%, sesame oil 2.73%, and sodium lauryl sulfate 1.09%. It doesn’t have any unpleasant odors and is safe for children and pets.

It has a built-in attachment for your garden hose. Hook it up, turn on the water, and spray your yard, up to 5,000 square feet per 32-ounce bottle.

As soon as you finish spraying, it’s safe for you and your family to play in the yard.

In addition to fleas, it also kills ants, chiggers, flies, chinch bugs, Japanese beetles, mosquitoes, and more. It can be safely used on your vegetables, flowers, dog kennels, and more.

It washes away in rain and only lasts about a month even in dry weather.

Pros

  • All-natural ingredients
  • No harsh chemicals
  • Safe around pets and children
  • Treats about 5,000 square feet

Cons

  • Washes away in the rain
  • It lasts for about 30 days
  • Professional Insecticide
  • Treats up to 2,625 square feet

It kills adult fleas, flea larvae, and eggs. It has a strong odor but it dries quickly.

Once it’s dry, it’s safe for your pets and children. It kills adult fleas for about 30 days and the larvae and eggs for up to seven months.

This is a professional pesticide used by many pest control professionals around the United States. It’s good for beginning-to-medium strength infestations.

For heavy infestations, you’ll need something stronger.

Pros

  • Professional Insecticide
  • Treats up to 2,625 square feet
  • Easy and ready to use

Cons

  • It has a strong odor
  • Won’t handle heavy infestations
