Permethrin SFR 36.8% is a highly effective pesticide. Permethrin is a synthetic version of natural chemicals found in flowers. It kills insects as well as repelling them, making it a great product for insect control and at a great price to boot.

It is made by Control Solutions, a respected name in the pest control industry. It has an excellent safety record in addition to it’s documented success at insect control as well as termite control. It is widely used by professionals throughout the United States.

Customer reviews agree with the professionals, which dovetails with our own use of it for many years. It is an excellent crack-and-crevice treatment for spiders, ants, and dozens of other inside pests.

It leaves an invisible long-term residual around windows and doors as a barrier to keep insects out of your house. It won’t stain the drapes, baseboards, or even up high in the corners where spiders like to hang out.

One 32-ounce bottle of concentrate will yield 40 gallons of the finished product at 0.8 ounces per gallon of water for indoor use and 100 gallons of the finished product at 1/3 ounces per gallon of water for outdoor use.

Outside, it kills a wide variety of pests such as beetles, fire ants, wasps, earwigs, millipedes, and more. For termite control, you’ll have to let a licensed professional apply it but you can save some money by supplying them with the pesticide.

The Bottom Line:

Permethrin SFR 36.8% is the good stuff. You’ll get a lot of use out of it.

What Is Permethrin SFR?

Martin’s Permethrin SFR is an insecticide and termiticide produced by Control Solutions, Inc. It’s a broad-spectrum insecticide used to provide a quick knockdown and create a residual barrier to a wide range of insects and pests.

Professionally licensed pest control technicians can use it to eliminate subterranean termites. Anyone can use it to eliminate and control any other pests around the house, yard, barns, fields, businesses, athletic fields, restaurants, poultry houses, and churches.

It is effective against fire ants, aphids, chiggers, scorpions, cockroaches, millipedes spiders, mosquitoes, flies, carpenter bees, mole crickets mites, silverfish, pillbugs, earwigs, bagworms, caterpillars, ground beetles, Japanese Beetles, and more.

To treat inside, you’ll need a 1-gallon sprayer, either the kind the professionals use or a slightly less expensive model for DIY use. Outside, you’ll need a backpack sprayer for treating around the house or yard and a fogger for treating tall bushes and trees.

What’s The Active Ingredient In Permethrin SFR?

The active ingredient is Permethrin SFR is . . . wait for it . . . Permethrin. Specifically, it makes up 36.8% of the volume of the pesticide. The rest of the ingredients, the remaining 63.2% of the volume, are considered inert.

However, those ingredients are inert only insofar as they don’t kill insects. They are active fixers and stabilizers to maintain the effectiveness of the formulation. Without them, the pesticide would quickly break down and biodegrade into uselessness.

Permethrin is a pyrethroid, a synthetic version of natural pyrethrins, which are derived from chrysanthemum flowers. Pyrethrins and pyrethroids are some of the most widely used active ingredients in the world, found in over 3,500 registered products.

Pyrethroids are cheaper and less prone to degrading than natural pyrethrins. Their use has increased steadily over the years, replacing the older, more toxic organophosphate and carbamate pesticides that were previously in widespread use.

Permethrin is considered an insect repellent. A repellent is not intended to kill insects but to keep them away. Natural pyrethrum, the actual ingredient in chrysanthemum flowers, not only kills insects, but it also repels them. Permethrin kills and repels insects.

Permethrin does have a pungent odor that lasts for several hours after it’s been sprayed. If you use it indoors, make sure the area is well ventilated. Outside, the odor shouldn’t be a problem and it will probably disperse very quickly.

Does Permethrin SFR Work?

Yes, it does.  Permethrin targets the central nervous system in insects. It interferes with the sodium channels, which disrupts the normal functioning of the neurons. The neurons send the wrong signals, which in turn leads to muscle spasms, paralysis, and death.

did you know permethrin sfr review fact

Permethrin can affect insects either through physical contact or ingestion. Insect legs are extremely thin, so the amount of physical contact with treated surfaces is minimal at best. Therefore, it may take several trips through the treated area to kill an insect.

Like many chemicals, Permethrin is highly toxic to fish, honeybees, and aquatic invertebrates because it disrupts the sodium channels in their central nervous systems just as it does with insects. Never use it around ponds, lakes, streams, or rivers.

Is Permethrin SFR Safe For Cats and Dogs?

When it is applied in accordance with the product label, Permethrin SFR 36.8% is safe for your pets, including your cats and dogs. However, you’ll need to cover your fish tanks and birdcages before spraying around the house with it.

Additionally, the label may have specific directions regarding re-entry times into the treated area in the case of a heavy infestation that necessitates a heavy treatment to kill the target pests. Keep your pets out of the area until it is completely dry.

Is Permethrin SFR Harmful To Humans or Children?

This is a bit trickier than pets. Synthetic pyrethroids are modeled on pyrethrins which are safe in their natural form. However, the synthetic versions aren’t an exact duplicate and they are highly concentrated. Adults are generally immune but children may not be.

Children constitute a broad spectrum from infants to teenagers who are nearly physically identical to adults. Post-pubescent teenagers can be considered in the same class as adults for this purpose and for them there is little to no danger.

Small children, however, are still growing and their bodies are very immature. Children have higher skin surface area to weight ratio than adults, which can absorb more of the pesticide. They also breathe and eat more per body weight than adults.

Finally, small children, especially infants, are closer to the ground than adults. Infants are known to crawl across the floor or ground, pick something up and stick it in their mouth, or put their hands in their mouths. This presents an entry path for pesticides.

The EPA has struggled with this problem over the years and their answers are more political than scientific. However, as a general rule of thumb, prepubescent children and infants should be kept out of treated areas until they are completely dry.

If there was a heavy insect infestation that required you to spray heavier than normal, it might be advisable to keep children and infants out of the area for up to 24 hours.

We’re erring on the side of safety but the truth is, Permethrin SFR has an excellent safety record. Even drinking the concentrate straight from the bottle wouldn’t do anything more than make you sick for a few days.

Permethrin SFR vs Other Products?

You might be wondering how Permethrin SFR stacks up against competing products. Here is a quick comparison of its effectiveness against four leading competitors.

  1. Bifenthrin I/T
  2. Tempo Ultra SC
  3. Demon Max
  4. Wondercide Natural

Permethrin SFR vs Bifenthrin I/T

No products found.

No products found.

The active ingredient in Bifenthrin I/T is Bifenthrin, a pyrethroid similar to Permethrin. Both have similar modes of actions and both are labeled for termites as well as other insects. However, the percentage of active ingredients in them is different.

Permethrin SFR has 36.8% and Bifenthrin I/T has 7.9%. Don’t let that fool you though. Bifenthrin is a newer formulation than Permethrin and in this case, less is more. 7.9% of Bifenthrin is equivalent to 36.8% Permethrin, and maybe a little more.

Bifenthrin has one major advantage over Permethrin; it doesn’t have the strong odor that Permethrin does. In fact, most people can’t smell Bifenthrin at all. This makes a big difference when you’re spraying inside for heavy insect infestations.

Bifenthrin comes in a 3/4-gallon jug of 96 ounces. Depending on the concentration you need for the finished product, it can make between 75-192 gallons (see the label for mixing directions and percentages).

Overall, we have to give this one to Bifenthrin I/T, even if only by a little bit. The absence of any odor was the main thing factor in our decision.

Permethrin SFR vs Tempo Ultra SC

No products found.

No products found.

The active ingredient in Tempo is ß-Cyfluthrin 11.8%. The SC in the name stands for Suspension Concentrate, meaning the pesticide won’t dissolve in water. Instead, tiny particles are suspended in the fluid. Always be sure to shake well before using this.

ß-Cyfluthrin is another pyrethroid like Permethrin. However, the mode of action is somewhat different. It acts as a stomach poison as well as attacking the sodium channels in the central nervous system.

One 8-ounce bottle of Tempo will make 30 gallons of the finished product and it can be used inside and out to kill all the same insects as Permethrin, however, it is not labeled for termites, so Permethrin wins on that score.

On the other hand, Tempo is almost completely odorless. Like Permethrin and Bifenthrin, Tempo doesn’t leave any visible residue and won’t stain your drapes or other fabrics when you’re spraying.

It has a quick knockdown and a long-lasting residual effect. Overall though, we have to consider this one a tie.

Permethrin SFR vs Demon Max

No products found.

The active ingredient in Demon Max is Cypermethrin 25.3%, an older pyrethroid developed in 1974. Early versions of Cypermethrin were formulated as dry powders that partially dissolved in water.

The undissolved powder was very abrasive on sprayers and when it dried it left a visible residue behind. In the pest control industry, these traces came to be known as “demon tracks” and they were very unpopular with customers.

Manufacturers eventually responded with liquid versions that didn’t leave visible residues but the damage to the name was already done and still lingers. However, modern versions of Cypermethrin don’t leave those residues or lingering odors.

Demon Max has a shelf life of 3-5 years so one bottle will last a long time. One 16-ounce bottle will create 12 gallons of the finished product, making it one of the more expensive alternatives to Permethrin SFR.

Mainly because of the cost, we have to give this one to Permethrin SFR.

Permethrin SFT vs Wondercide Natural

No products found.

Wondercide is an all-natural pesticide that uses 12.63% cedarwood oil, 2.73% sesame oil, and 1.09% sodium lauryl sulfate as the active ingredients. Because there aren’t any harsh chemicals in it, it is completely safe for pets and children.

It does kill insects and one 32-ounce bottle will treat up to 5,000 square feet. Attach your garden hose to the built-in spray nozzle, turn on the water, and let her rip. It dries quickly and your children can enter the treated area as soon as it is dry.

It doesn’t have any unpleasant odor and is safe on your vegetables, fruits, and ornamentals. The downside is that it only lasts for a few weeks, necessitating constant reapplication. We like Wondercide but we’re giving this one to Permethrin SFR.
