What's The History of Plunkett's Pest Control?

Plunkett's Pest control has been a family business for over 100 years now, currently owned by Stacy O'Reilly, and has quite the large service area. 

They cover not only the Minneapolis area but as far west as North Dakota and South Dakota, out to some of Pennsylvania, and even as far south as New Mexico. 

Plunkett's is large enough that you couldn't really consider them "local" anymore but, they certainly shouldn't be lumped in with nation wide chains like Terminix and Orkin. 

Because of this you're likely to start to get some of the issues that come along with corporate pest management companies as well as lose some of the personal touch of a local company. However, you should still have a generally good customer service experience. 

One thing that is impressive about Plunkett's is that many of their customers seem to know their technician by name. For their size that can be hard to do.

One of the biggest difficulties that pest control companies have is managing their service routes efficiently, but without sacrificing quality. So far for their size, it doesn't seem that Plunkett's technicians have lost touch with their customers, in fact quite the opposite. 

Plunkett's puts a lot of effort into training and retaining their technicians, which can be difficult in an industry with a pretty high turn over rate in my experience. 

Their technicians are trained, they stick around, and their service is effective for most of their customers. 

And in a case where a human just might not be enough, Plunkett's has a really cool K9 bed bug detection option which is far more effective at identifying bed bugs than any human. 

Overall, you are more likely than not to have a positive experience as far as your service is concerned with Plunkett's, and that is the most important thing. The every day creepy crawlies will be taken care of. 

From what I can tell, they can have some difficulty with rodents, though I wouldn't give them a failing grade there by any means. Average at worse. 

Their service schedule is to service only 3 times a year, which is 1 too few in my estimation. 4 services a year- one for each season- is standard. 

To be fair, they will come out between services for free (if you're on an ongoing service plan) if you need them to, so the number of services is less important. 

Minnesota also experiences much harsher winters than many places in the country which will do a lot to keep bug populations down and that extra service may not be necessary in those conditions. 

With a larger company, you might experience some growing pains as a new customer with the communication between the customer service staff and the technicians. 

Most negative interactions with this company have a lot more to do with scheduling, miscommunication, and negative interactions with customer service reps than with their actual service. 

My first interaction with a customer service representative was very pleasant and they were more than willing to answer my questions.

But the second time I called, the representative seemed initially annoyed with me. It was very brief and they certainly weren't warm by any stretch of the imagination, but not rude either. Additionally, they did get more friendly as we neared the end of the conversation. 

If i was a fired up customer that was upset by something I could have easily found my initial interaction with them very off putting. 

Any complaints or negative reviews with Plunkett's are very quickly responded to though and they do at least make an effort to reach out, right the wrongs,  or unruffle feathers where needed. 

The technicians, though well trained, have also had their decent share of bedside manner issues. 

In some services technicians need to move things around in your house, and sometimes even remove bedding, and clothing from closets. 

This is usually only for things like fleas and bed bugs, but could be necessary for rodents as well. 

In more than one instance, Plunkett's technicians may have done the job right, but not returned everything to its proper place, left a bit of a mess, or broken something in the home. 

Are those rare occurrences for the number of services that are performed in a day? More than likely, but they are still definitely worth mentioning. 

With that said: all in all, I like Plunkett's. They're still in the sweet spot where they are local enough, but not too big. They have the experience to do the job right and I'd feel comfortable with their service.

Which Pests Does Plunkett's Pest Control Cover?

Plunkett's offers a pretty wide range of pest control services. You expect a pest control company to cover the usual ant, wasp, spider control, or a mice and rat infestation.

They'll also cover things like: boxelder bugs, asian lady beetles (lady bugs), carpenter ants and termites, and cockroaches. From my research you can be assured that most any creepy crawly that you can think of can be covered by Plunkett's.

A few other notable pest options however are: fleas and ticks, grain/rice beetles, as well as a mosquito control treatment. 

Mosquito control can be tricky though and they do advise that you have the service performed 1-5 days before the specific event you're trying to keep the mosquitoes down for. 

Most pest control companies I've been familiar with do not bother with large wildlife pest problems because they're more trouble than they're worth. 

Plunkett's is the exception to this rule. 

A basic service (which we'll get into in a minute) will not cover you for larger rodents and animals, but Plunkett's does have technicians trained to handle these guys if you need them at some point.

You can also get exclusionary services to keep these critter out in the future and repair structural damage they might have caused.

How Expensive Is Plunkett's Pest Control?

A year round pest service (which is what I reccomend 99 out 100 times) with Plunkett's Pest Control will run you roughly $450-$500 dollars. Which in my experience is a pretty typical and reasonable price for the service. 

This will cover you for most basic pest issues or a full on infestation. (ants, spiders, wasps, cockroaches, etc) As well as mice and rats. If there's any pest issues between services, Plunkett's Pest Control will come out again to service. 

Keep in mind that things like a bed bug infestation, termites, or larger wildlife are not covered by year round services and are an additional charge if they become an issue even while on service.  

This is a pretty standard industry practice. So just be sure to ask if you have a specific pest in mind. 

Plunkett's also offers a one time pest management service for infestations. Many pest control companies do not even offer one-time services because they are hard to guarantee.

Typically I've seen one-time services guaranteed for 30 days but Plunkett's will actually guarantee for 60 days. You will however, only be covered for the specific pest issue you called them out to treat for.  

A one-time service will run you just shy of $200. 

All of these estimates are for residential properties and not for commercial clients. 

Plunkett's does offer commercial services, but in my experience those are priced on a more individual basis and hard to generalize pricing. 

Is Plunkett's Pet Safe?

Plunkett's Pest Control takes the necessary precautions to ensure that your pets stay safe with their treatment programs. 

Most cats and dogs are going to be just fine around any professional pest service, and will actually benefit from not sharing your yard with pests, beyond the obvious fleas and ticks. 

Much of safety in pest control companies comes down not to which products are being used, but rather how they're applied. 

Plunkett's has a registry showing all of their technicians all of whom are licensed. Any licensed technician who has gone through training will know how to appropriately apply products in a way that solve your pest problems, but keep your pets safe. 

Most pest practices do not need to be adjusted much for dog, or cat safety. However, If you keep birds or fish, or especially something like a tarantula in the home, just let them know. 

Plunkett's takes the necessary precautions to keep pets safe; but from someone who's worked in the industry I'm telling you that they won't know which precautions to take if you don't let them know.

You can also just call over the phone and get an estimate for your property and service.

For those interested in the ongoing service program, you can get a technician to come out for free and look over the property. 

However, bed bugs, wood destroying organisms, and wildlife may not be included. 

A technician may come out if you're not sure if you have bed bugs, but if you advance to K9 detection for bedbugs, then that would not be a free service. 

When it comes to one-time services for an infestation or specific pest problem, there may not be a free inspection as well. The price for a specific pest will be more fixed in a one-time scenario.
