Florida Pest Control Review

Our Overall Rating (3)

Florida Pest Control is a full-service pest management company based in Florida. However, it’s not the same company it was when it was founded over 70 years ago. So, keep reading because we’re going to show you why that is!

But first, take a quick peek at this comparison table below that shows the pros and cons of Florida Pest Control:

ProsCons
  • Friendly technicians
  • Bed bug heat treatments limited to commercial contracts
  • Ability to bundle some services
  • Website is difficult to navigate
  • Not as eco-friendly as it claims

What Does Florida Pest Control Cover?

Florida Pest Control offers a wide range of services for residential and commercial customers. Here, our experts break it down into general and specialized pest management services.

General Pests

These are the common pests covered by Florida Pest Control’s annual service guarantee:

  • Ants
  • Beetles
  • Cockroaches
  • Pantry pests
  • Rats and mice
  • Spiders

Insect Management

Florida Pest Control technicians use a combination of perimeter spray treatments along with granular baits outside. Inside service typically consists of spot treatments with liquid insecticides.

Florida Pest Control also offers a guarantee for all types of insects. That means you can call, and the company will send someone to perform a follow-up service. Yet, according to customer reviews, you may have to fight with its phone reps to ensure that happens.

Rodent Control

Technicians handle mice infestations with conventional snap traps and glue boards. Since most customers choose quarterly service options, dead rodents are seldom discarded by the company.

Rat service typically entails setting up a few traps. Unfortunately, follow-up visits are rare since it is not expressly written in the contract. So, it’s up to the customer to dispose of dead rodents.

Specialty Pests

These pests are not typically covered under Florida Pest Control’s general warranty agreement:

Bed Bugs

Residential bed bug treatments consist of a technician showing up with a can of aerosol spray and squirting the mattress a few times. So, to say that it’s unprofessional is an understatement. However, there have been a few exceptions reported, depending on the mood of the tech.

The commercial division is much different. For example, heat treatments for bed bugs are available for hotels and resorts. Also, its commercial techs are much better equipped to handle these biting pests.

Fleas and Ticks

While not all branches take care of fleas and ticks, most do. And it’s usually in line with most conventional treatments. An aerosol fogger or spray is set up while a second technician soaks the outside with a residual insecticide.

Mosquitoes

Mosquito control consists of a one-time yard spray using hand-held fogging equipment. Also, microbial insecticides are sometimes used in ponds and birdbaths. Treatments typically take about 15 minutes to complete.

Termites

Florida Pest Control provides free inspections for termites if it’s not tied to a real estate contract. Also, you’ll receive a free quote upon completion.

However, when it comes to termite pricing, this is where the company is the least transparent. So, it’s vital to get two other quotes for comparison.

There is one thing to watch out for. The company almost always gravitates to using bait stations exclusively. And it doesn’t matter what they charge. Unfortunately, this seems to be the case most of the time.

It should be mentioned that termite bait stations, by themselves, will not take care of your termite problem. For that reason, it’s best to consult with your technician and always ask thorough questions about what is and what isn’t included in the treatment plan.

On a final note, the company claims it performs tent fumigation services for drywood termites. However, most branch managers balk at the idea since smaller locations seldom have the materials available. For that reason, they will often refer you to a better-equipped service provider like Orkin.

Wasp Removal

The majority of pest control companies will refer you to a beekeeper for honeybees and other protected species. And Florida Pest Control is no different. However, they will tackle some types of wasps.

Usually, its technicians prefer that the colony be outside the home. But, despite that, they have on hand the proper equipment to take down any nest, no matter the location.

Wildlife Trapping

Florida Pest Control uses live trapping to remove nuisance wildlife from residences and businesses. Pest animals include:

  • Fox squirrel
  • Mole
  • Opossum
  • Skunk
  • Raccoon
  • Vole

This is the most specialized service the company offers. For that reason, you have to sign a separate contract for service. Yet, not all locations offer wildlife removal.

Lawn Care

Florida Pest control performs lawn treatment services for residential customers. Here are a few of its offerings:

  • Lawn insect control
  • Aeration services
  • Shrub and tree care
  • Weed control

The company receives terrible reviews for its lawn care services, especially throughout the Orlando area. But it’s unclear why.

However, one thing’s for certain. Florida Pest Control’s lawn treatment division is a huge distraction from its core business, which is solving people’s pest problems. So, it’s best if it focuses on that instead.

Gutter Service

The company’s gutter cleaning service is another head-scratcher. It states on its website that it helps eliminate insect pests. While that may be true, other companies specialize in cleaning gutters.

It appears to be another distraction away from its core business model. What’s more, the people they contract to perform the service don’t seem to know what they’re doing, anyway.

Florida Pest Control Cost Breakdown

Florida Pest Control prices are between $700 and $1,200 per year, depending on the size of your home. So, that’s quite a lot for a simple quarterly contract. Also, it isn’t competitive compared to U.S.-based companies like Terminix and Orkin.

Bed Bugs

Bed bug service is typically priced at around $1,000. So, it certainly appears to be in line with what other exterminators charge. However, when you factor in such a low level of service, it really isn’t a bargain at all.

Fleas and Ticks

Flea and tick removal run between $199 up to $2,000. The reason for the wide variance is that the technician will look at certain cost factors, including:

  • Number of pets you have
  • Square footage of home
  • Property acreage
  • Infestation levels

However, flea and tick service is the easiest for homeowners to negotiate. If you have a gift for price haggling, you may be able to get the tech to reduce the cost by as much as 50 percent. Since Florida Pest Control has no standard pricing, it’s easier than you think.

Mosquitoes

Mosquito spraying costs between $199 and $350 per month. However, the first service can run as high as $500. Again, you can usually negotiate the price in most instances.

Termites

Florida Pest Control will perform a termite inspection for free. But it can’t be part of a real estate transaction. For that, it’s around $300.

Subterranean termite control costs between $2,000 and $5,000, depending on the size of your home. Also, it depends on how far up the infestations go. In other words, if you find termites on the second level of your house, expect to pay up to 70 percent more for treatments. Termite prevention entails installing bait stations around your house. However, that can cost up to $1,000 or more. So, it might be better to shop around.

What to Expect If You Choose Florida Pest Control

Keep in mind that you’ll always be put on hold when calling this company. You have the option of either pressing #1 for a new service or #2 for existing customers.

Whether you call as a repeat customer or you’re setting up a new service, wait times typically run between 10 and 15 minutes, in most cases.

When the technician shows up, they will verify your contract purchase. Then, you’ll have to sign the agreement.

However, if you have any questions, you probably won’t get them answered. That’s because there’s a good chance the technician is new to the company. The reason is, Florida Pest Control generally experiences a staggering amount of employee turnover.

With the Smart Choice Program, you will have a scheduled visit every four months. In between, the service is guaranteed. However, that’s only for insects and not for rodents. If you need to schedule a follow-up visit, it can be a challenge to get someone to show up, as evidenced by several customer complaints.

Final Thoughts on Florida Pest Control

We give Florida Pest Control a 59 out of 100. That’s because the company seems to care more about cutting corners than delivering quality pest control services.

Overall, Florida Pest Control’s performance is lackluster at best. After all, a giant corporation 3,500 miles from the U.S. runs it.

That being said, the company has some redeeming qualities. For example, its service techs are generally polite and friendly. Unfortunately, however, there doesn’t seem to be enough of them.

Also, Florida Pest Control gets a Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating of A+, which is surprising. A fair amount of its pest control reviews are good. However, there are too many that are not.

On a final note, you can negotiate with the sales reps. That’s because the company’s prices are so wide open, anything goes. So, that means, if you’re good at bargaining, you can talk your salesperson down as much as 50 percent, in some cases.

Frequently Asked Questions About Florida Pest Control

Who Owns Florida Pest Control Exterminating?

Florida Pest Control was acquired by London-based conglomerate Rentokil Initial in 2019. At the time, PCT Magazine ranked it as one of the top pest control providers in the U.S. However, since the acquisition, Florida Pest Control has fallen in the ratings substantially.

Florida Pest Control is headquartered in Gainesville, Florida. However, it also operates in several other cities, including:

  • Orlando
  • Tampa
  • Palatka
  • Jacksonville
  • Winterhaven
  • Tallahassee
  • Kissimmee
  • Pensacola

Is Florida Pest Control Worth It?

If the service was consistent and the pricing was a bit more competitive, Florida Pest Control would be worth a look. But, instead, it falls short in almost every category.

Although the employees appear to be very friendly and outgoing, they don’t seem to be trained professionally. That could be because of the company’s high turnover rate. Or it may just be that the in-house training isn’t adequate.

What is the Smart Choice 4 for 3 Program?

The Smart Choice 4 for 3 Program is four insect treatments for the price of three. You can opt for either monthly, bi-monthly, or monthly service intervals.

Treatment areas include:

  • Lawns
  • Landscaped areas
  • Shrub beds
  • Ground cover
  • Mulched areas

The service is supposed to cover a wide variety of outdoor pests. However, it’s unclear what those are. And it’s equally confusing which pests are guaranteed indoors.

When Is Florida Pest Control Open?

Florida Pest Control is open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
