    Overview of Moxie Pest Control

First off: yes. Moxie Pest Control is a legitimate and established company that you can feel comfortable buying from.

They’ve been in business since 2001 and have dozens of offices all over the United States. Moxie relies heavily on its door-to-door sales program to generate new customers and grow its business nationwide.

Former employees (presumably high-performing sales reps) are encouraged to open up their own branches of Moxie Pest Control in their hometown. This has greatly helped Moxie’s growth over the past 20 years.

Although they rely heavily on door-to-door sales, they are, first and foremost a pest control company, as opposed to a marketing company that just happens to sell pest control, which is good. They excel and focus on general pest control, and from what I can tell, do it the right way.

Your service will include sweeping spider webs and wasp nests from the home. Treating the foundation, a granule in the yard to extend the barrier, treating the perimeter of the home, and interior treatments (usually on the first service but available for all other services if necessary/desired.)

Moxie also has a service guarantee, so if you need touch-up visits between your regularly scheduled services they will come out and retreat the home for free if needed.

Because of its business model, Moxie strikes the right balance between being a local company and being a nationwide business.

Some branches are and will be better run than others, but overall their customers have positive experiences and interactions with their technicians and customer service representatives.

I would comfortably recommend Moxie Pest Control for most people with their pest needs.

    Moxie Pest Control Reviews

It’s not all sunshine and roses with Moxie though. There are some things worth mentioning that they struggle with and that customers have complained about.

The majority of complaints about Moxie are from people that have never actually had their service and should therefore be disregarded.

Typically these are people who are upset that a door-to-door sales rep showed up in their neighborhood and that the person was found to be pushy or was upset that their no soliciting sign was ignored.

Not to get political, but Moxie and other pest control companies are/were considered an essential business, and door-to-door sales is essentially how they stay in business.

Other concerns that in my opinion need to be given more weight were that they thought the sales reps were pushy or were not entirely up-front about the terms of the contract. (which I’ve gone over in How Expensive is Moxie? section).

The majority of Moxie’s customers come from these sales, so you can expect that generally, this isn’t a problem.

But, there’s likely to be some bad eggs who will say what they need to to make the sale; or some new reps who don’t do a great job explaining.

The most important thing to know is that it is a contract for a year of service, and there is a cancelation fee if you discontinue in that first year.

This leads to one of the more important complaints, across multiple branches I’ve seen customer complaints of having difficulty canceling their service with Moxie. Despite repeated efforts, some office and sales managers are not calling back when a customer wishes to cancel.

It’s hard to determine just how common this is, but it’s prevalent enough that it isn’t just one or two branches who’ve had this complaint.

Finally, Glassdoor reviews from former employees are generally very positive.

There is a complaint that can affect your service is that during the summer/sales months, their techs and sales reps are worked pretty hard and struggle to maintain a work/life balance.

I’ve seen this with a lot of these companies and when a guy has been in the sun in full gear all day, by the end of it you may get someone who is just ready to get out of there.

Which Pests Does Moxie Pest Control Cover?

Moxie can handle almost any creepy crawly pest you could throw at them. They have a pretty exhaustive list, but we’ll list the basics here for you:

    • Ants
    • Spiders
    • Cockroaches
    • Wasps
    • Fleas & Ticks
    • Earwigs
    • Rodents
    • Beetles
    • Scorpions
    • Termites*
    • Bed Bugs*
    • Moles & Voles*
    • Gophers
    • Mosquitoes*

*These services are only available in select areas. Check with your local branch to make sure they’re available if you’ll need them.

Moxie’s specialty is in general pest control, although they will tackle bigger and tougher pest problems if necessary and are capable of doing so.

They don’t handle wildlife beyond things like gophers, moles, and rodents. This is pretty typical though, it can be tough to find a company that will do those things.

Their termite service exists as a separate service from their general pest control and can be purchased as a separate service without entering into a contract. The same goes for bed bugs.

Though they do cover termites and have a separate service for them, I will say that there were more pest control services-related complaints about their termite service than any other.

They are great at general pests, but some indications (though not entirely conclusive) that they are struggling on the termite side and getting that figured out.

How Expensive Is Moxie Pest Control?

Moxie can be found in a lot of different locations all across the United States, and there isn’t one-size-fits-all pricing that is applied to every location. That being said, there are some general guidelines to help you know what to expect.

Moxie’s general service pest control will cover you for most pests as I mentioned earlier. The pricing will be determined mostly by the size of your home once you’ve excluded problems like termites, and bed bugs.

For a general pest service with an average home size of say 2000-2500 square ft, you will be looking at somewhere in the $550 to $800 range in a year.

That will seem like a pretty large range in price (granted, it kind of is) but there are some pretty good reasons for that which we’ll go over.

You’ll be under a one-year contract for your first year of service with Moxie which will be one initial service to get things started, and then four quarterly services (every 3 months/every season). The first quarterly will occur about a month after your initial service.

These two services about a month apart is a good indication that Moxie knows their pest control and offers a good service. This breaks up the breeding/egg cycle of bugs and will make everyone’s life easier down the road.

The good news too is that any year you stay on service after the first year will be $100+ cheaper because you will only have that initial service once. Any subsequent year will have just the four quarterly treatments.

Additional services like Bed bugs, moles, rodents, or termites will cost extra and can be added to your general pest control service. Rodents would add about $10 more per service generally.

Other services can depend a lot on your particular issue and a quote specifically from Moxie would be the best way to find out.

What Other Cost Factors Will Determine My Price?

Beyond square footage and pests, there are a few reasons that Moxie will have various prices for different locations.

First, Moxie as a whole is made up of independent branches that are owned by former employees which may have a different philosophy on how they want to charge their customers.

Second, they are located in very diverse locations which can have more overhead costs depending on the pests that are prevalent in their area.

For example, some areas may be dealing with scorpions where others aren’t, and offering bed bugs or termite services can be more expensive as well.

The last thing that will determine your price is part of a little industry secret I happen to know: If a pest company is selling door to door (and sometimes even when they’re not) there is always-let me repeat- ALWAYS a “promotion” going on.

A cancellation fee can be a sort of scary word in a culture that hates contracts and prefers pay-as-you-go. Especially when already trying to overcome the hurdle of trust in a door to door scenario.

So what does this mean for you? Let me explain:

If Moxie needs to charge you $179 for the initial service. What is going to happen is they’ll tell you that typically the initial service costs $279, but this summer, because their truck is in the area, or this week, or this Fall, or this Christmas (you get the point) they’re doing $100 off.

Then the terms of the contract are that you simply have to stay on service for the first year to keep the discount; but if you cancel before the year of service, they just ask you to “refund” the discount you were given.

Some sales reps prefer to give a cheaper price and have a higher cancellation fee so you’re more likely to buy and stay on service, and others prefer to have a higher contract value so they make more commission on the sale but charge more initially.

So we’re clear, I’m not demonizing this practice. It’s all part of marketing. Just like a “buy one get one free” at the grocery store. Pest control needs something to get you in the door and stay in the door.

I also think it’s just helpful information for consumers to know.

    Is Moxie Pest Control Pet-safe?

I’ve always said that the safety of pest products nowadays has far more to do with how pest products are applied, than specifically which products are being used.

EPA regulation on pesticides will ensure that products are pet, child, and eco-friendly.

This can only be ensured so far though.

Over-the-counter medicine, for example, is okay for you to buy and administer yourself- but it is very important that you follow the guidelines on the bottle.

To ignore the instructions and take medicine in excess would of course be dangerous.

So much of pest control training is the same way: ALWAYS follow the label.

Moxie goes out of its way to ensure that all of its field experts are licensed to apply pesticides. This will ensure that someone has been trained on how to ensure that pest control services at your home are done in a safe way.

According to my research, I’m satisfied that Moxie Pest Control technicians are trained well enough that you can feel comfortable and safe with them servicing your property.

Communication with your pest control company goes a long way. Just let them know what kinds of pets are on the property. Dogs and cats will be just fine- pets like birds, koi fish, or reptiles could be more sensitive and it would be important for your tech to know they’re there.

Does Moxie Pest Control Offer Free Inspections?

Moxie offers free quotes via their website, or you can call in and talk to someone in person.

Since the basic service will essentially be the same regardless of your pest needs- usually by determining your square footage and ruling out some more difficult pests (termites, bed bugs, etc.) they’ll be able to give you accurate pricing.

Many of their sales reps are out knocking door to door in the summer months and are usually knowledgeable enough to inspect the house-some even use free inspections as their sales pitch.

Giving a price is kind of their entire job- so you can take advantage of their presence if you have a rep in your area or at your door and they’d be more than happy to do so.
