Company Review

JP McHale Pest Management, Inc is a pest control company here in the United States that services most of the New York and Connecticut areas. This company was founded by James P. McHale, Sr. in 1971.

This pest control company is a family-owned and operated business with its headquarters located at 241 Bleakley Ave, Buchanan, NY 10511. Today they service the Tri-State area by providing air duct cleaning, residential pest control services, and commercial pest control services for their community.

These business owners set themselves apart from your everyday run of the mill great company by bringing extra credentials to the table. After graduating from Cornell University in 1988 with an entomology degree, McHale’s son Jim took on a full-time position at the company.

Four years later, he was joined by his two brothers; Douglas J. McHale who has a degree in phytopathology, and Richard D. McHale who has a degree in environmental sciences. Together they rebranded the company to reflect a new era of innovation and environmental sustainability.

JP McHale Pest Management offers more than just pest control services as I briefly mentioned earlier. In an attempt to be the best that they can be this company also offers crawl space encapsulation, lawn fertilization, tree services, mold removal, and insulation. I can only imagine that offering so many services in the New York area that they must keep some crazy business hours!

Areas Serviced

For the state of New York JP McHale Pest Management offers its services for the following areas:

Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess, Long Island, Orange, Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Manhattan, and Westchester county.

For those of you who live in Connecticut, you can find their services located in the following areas:

Stamford, Greenwich, New Canaan, Darien, Ridgefield, Bridgeport, Cos Cob, Rowayton, Hartford County, Litchfield County, Middlesex County, New Haven County, New London County, Tolland County, and Windham County.

This is a decent coverage area of the two states and I’m sure if they continue to prosper and make their customers happy that they may even find themselves expanding into one of the other nearby states.

Having touched on some of the other services that they offer let’s zero back in on the pest control side of things. For their residential customers, they offer 6 different pest control plans. There is the PC on-demand plan which covers over 15 different potential insects and promises that if the pests come back, they will too for free.

They also offer four other packages for different forms of termite treatments which are the Guardian, Home pest prevention, Termite Mitigation, and Vector Intervention programs. Some of these programs sprinkle in different other pests that they will monitor and control as well. Lastly, they have the overwinter program where they specifically monitor for pests that will try and live inside of the walls of your home throughout the winter.

Unfortunately, this company isn’t overly clear on some of the specifics that I’d like to know before purchasing any of these programs. Such as how long do they last? Are these all year packages where I am paying for a quarterly service or is this a one-time payment and you come back if there is a problem and I pay again?

I even spent some time trying to get ahold of one of their online representatives but no one responded to my inquiry which really makes me wonder what is the point of having a chatbox on your website if you aren’t going to respond to the questions your potential customers send you?

Customer Service

It doesn’t matter if you’re a health care, commercial property owner, or a residential customer who has signed up for an exterminator to come to take care of your infestation. It doesn’t matter if they are exterminating carpenter ants or bed bugs. What really matters is that they come out and give you the quality work that you deserve and if there is a mistake that their customer service takes good care of you.

My research into this companies customer service included 5 different yet major websites that talk about the kind of work and customer service that JP McHale provides its customers and nearly 1000 reviews from their customers that talk about how they were treated by this company.

On average the customers tend to give this company a 4.3-star rating which is quite good. Other places that use a letter grade system give this company a rating of an A-. Despite being in business for 49 years they are still not an accredited member of the BBB. The good news is that there is only one complaint ever lodged with the BBB and the bad news is that this company has never taken the time to resolve the complaint.

Sounds great, doesn’t it? Last year, May 2, 2019, this family-owned business was bought out by Anticimex. Oftentimes, when a small company sells to a larger company the values and core beliefs that made that company great begin to degrade in the pursuit of the almighty dollar.

Since that sale more and more customer complaints have started to pile up. In fact, up until 2018 most of what this company customers had to say were 5-star compliments across the board. Since 2019 more and more of what their customers have to say has started leaning towards the negative side of things.

Which Pests Does JP McHale Pest Management Cover?

JP McHale Pest management offers many services as we have discussed above. Specifically talking about pest control and pests that this company targets you can expect to receive services for any and all of the following pests:

Ants, Beetles, Centipedes and Millipedes, Cicada killers, Clover mites, Cockroaches, Crickets, Earwigs, Fleas, Pillbugs, Rodents, Silverfish, Sowbugs, Spiders, Springtails, Stinging insects, Stink bugs, Stored product pests, Termites, and Ticks.

They also offer services for mosquito abatement treatments and bed bug removal services. When they come to inspect your home for bed bugs they do have a dog that they use to sniff them out and honestly I wish more companies used this approach.

How Expensive Is JP McHale Pest Management?

One of the most frequently asked questions about any service is how much does this cost? In pest control that isn’t always an easy question to ask because the price varies so much from service to service. What you pay for a bed bug removal service, termite treatment or just to have your home treated quarterly for spider control will all vary. In fact not only does each treatment cost fluctuate from each other but the size of the home will change the price as well.

What I can tell you is that their PC on-demand package is supposed to save you 400 dollars a year. Now your average yearly pest control service only costs 400 to 600 dollars a year as long as you aren’t having to deal with termites or bed bedbugs. So the fact that this is reducing the cost by 400 dollars leads me to believe that this company is on the higher end of the price range.

Is JP McHale Pest Management Pet Safe?

For many people, their pets are family and they want to know that their family is going to be safe after every single treatment. They are constantly bringing us joy and for some people, they are the very center of their world. So the question as to how safe something is for our pets is a very serious question.

This is where things begin to hit a gray area for a company that has been so black and white on what you can expect. They make claims about organic treatments but just because something is organic doesn’t mean it is pet safe. The more unsettling part is that they don’t make any statement about how their products are pet-safe which leads me to believe that the products do not pet safe.

In addition to my own thoughts on the subject, one customer has complained that when this company comes out to treat the lawn area of her apartment complex that they have to leave the dogs off the lawn for an hour after they treat. This also supports my belief that this company does not use pet-safe products.

As always speak with your technician before they begin the treatment and ask about any pet safety points that you may need to observe and for how long. As a precaution, you should always remove all your pets and put food and toys away from the area that a technician is treating in or outside of your home.

Does JP McHale Pest Management Offer Free Inspections?

I was unable to find any free inspection offers from JP McHale Pest management. Normally a company that does free inspections makes it quite clear that they do offer this service as it is a huge attraction point.

Something I find strange is that they don’t even offer you a free quote over the phone which is a little annoying to me as the customer. I want to have an idea of what I’m getting into before I have someone show up and charge me just for the privilege of finding out I don’t want their service.
