Bakersfield, California, is home to many types of pests. Some of these pests are active throughout the entire year. However, other types of pests will only be active during certain parts of the year.

To help you prepare for seasonal pests, we’ve compiled a list of what pests are most active during each season in Bakersfield, California

Spring

Termites: Termites are present throughout most of the year in California but are most active in the springtime because many termites are attracted to moisture, humidity, and rain. Bakersfield has both subterranean and drywood termites. Drywood termites cause some property damage, but subterranean termites cause extensive damage that can happen in a very short period of time. Common signs of termites include molted skin, mud tubes, decaying wood, and feces.

Stinging insects: Stinging insects, like bees, wasps, and yellowjackets, are some of the most irritating pests to have flying around your property. Not only is being stung painful, but some individuals have severe allergic reactions that can cause anaphylaxis, which can lead to trouble breathing and even death. Many types of stinging insects, especially bees, are protected due to their essential role in pollination. So, if you see a hive or nest on your property, do not attempt to remove it yourself because the species may be protected, and stinging insects tend to be territorial and aggressive near their homes.

June bug: June bugs don’t bite or sting humans and are not considered medically dangerous. However, June bugs are highly destructive to your yard and garden. In particular, June bug larvae, or grubs, cause extensive damage to the roots of plants and grass.

Summer

Fleas: Fleas are annoying pests, especially to our pets. Unfortunately, fleas can also transmit potentially severe diseases, like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Fleas breed quickly and can come into our homes on our pets. Once inside our homes, their eggs may roll onto our carpet, bedding, and furniture. To prevent a flea infestation, flea prevention products and frequently checking your pet for fleas can be beneficial.

Mosquitoes: Mosquitoes are among the most irritating pests out there due to their itchy bites. Mosquitoes prefer hot, humid climates, which Bakersfield offers throughout much of the year, making California a great place for mosquitoes to thrive. Mosquito treatments can be especially helpful if you have standing water on your property because mosquitoes usually breed and collect near standing water.

Ants: Ants typically enter our homes in search of food, water, and shelter. If they find access to food and water, they will usually settle in and start building their colony in our homes. Unfortunately, ant colonies can easily have thousands of ants, making it difficult to eradicate them. To prevent ants, keep your floors and house clear of crumbs and clean up any spills thoroughly.

Fall/Winter

Cockroaches: Cockroaches thrive during warmer months, so when the temperatures start to drop, cockroaches look for warmth inside our homes. They can usually be found in bathrooms and kitchens. However, some will even live in sewer drains, walls, and the basement for warmth. Cockroaches also present health problems because they can carry many diseases, such as salmonella, typhoid fever, and plague. A substance they secrete can also trigger asthma attacks.

Spiders: Spiders usually live outdoors, but some species, such as the American house spider, cellar spider, domestic house spider, and cupboard spider, have adapted to live indoors entirely. Spiders typically live inside our homes for easy access to food, so if you have other insects in your home, be wary because spiders may soon follow. California is also home to the venomous black widow, whose bites can cause medical harm to humans.
Rodents: Rodents are highly adaptive mammals that break into our homes during the colder months in their search for food and shelter. Rodents can thrive off a variety of food sources and are great at living in urban environments. On top of their versatility, rodents are also quick breeders who can produce hundreds, even thousands of offspring per year. As a result, if you suspect you have rodents, it’s paramount that you act quickly before the infestation expands even more.
