Everything is bigger in Texas, including the pests. Unfortunately, pests are present year-round throughout the Killeen, Texas area.

Today, we’re going to go over the most prominent pests in Killeen, Texas, by season, so you can be aware of what pests you should be on the lookout for.

Spring

Scorpions: Scorpions are creepy pests that deliver intensely painful stings with their tails. They often come into our homes looking for food, so if you have other insects in your home, your likelihood of scorpions following increases. Scorpions don’t leave any signs that they’ve invaded your home. The only real sign of a scorpion infestation is that you begin noticing scorpions in your home, so if you spot one, be sure to act immediately before the problem expands.

Bed bugs: Bed bugs can survive year-round but are more likely to show up during the spring and summer months because of the increase in travel. Bed bugs are master hitchhikers who travel on clothing, luggage, and furniture. As their name suggests, they are typically found near beds or other furniture where humans sleep. This gives them easy access to their preferred food source: human blood. At night, bed bugs come out to feed on human blood, then they retreat, sometimes for months at a time, before feeding again. This gives them plenty of time to expand the infestation.

June bugs: June bugs are scarab beetles. Though they are harmless to humans, they are devastating to our lawns and landscaping. Adult June bugs damage plants’ leaves and stems, but the June bug larvae are the biggest issue. Larvae, or white grub, destroy and cause serious damage to the roots of your lawn and other plants.

Summer

Mosquitoes: Mosquitoes are a severe issue to Texans. Mosquitoes bite humans, leaving irritating bites on the skin. These bites are annoying. However, the more significant problem is that mosquitoes can spread diseases, like West Nile and Zika, through their bites. These diseases can be dangerous to human health, especially to pregnant women and their unborn children or other compromised individuals.

Ants: Although ants are mostly harmless to humans, they can be a significant nuisance to us. Ants can be tough to get rid of because they create large colonies containing thousands of ants. Ants often enter our homes looking for crumbs of food and water. If they discover food in our homes, other ants will follow the other ants’ scent and enter the house searching for food, increasing the overall infestation.

Bats: Bats are dangerous wildlife that can carry diseases like rabies. They can transmit rabies to humans and animals through bites or their saliva, which can be incredibly dangerous and even deadly. Bat guano, or bat feces, is also extraordinarily smelly and can transmit hazardous diseases to humans, making it difficult and hazardous to clean up without proper safety equipment.

Fall/Winter

Silverfish: Silverfish are not harmful to human health. However, they can quickly cause damage to our belongings, such as clothing, food, and books. They are primarily active at night and prefer to feed on starchy foods and materials with high protein content.

Rodents: Rodents are tricky to prevent because they can squeeze into tight spaces and gaps in our homes, often only needing a hole the size of a nickel or quarter to break in. Once inside our house, they will eat anything they can get their paws on. Rodents breed rapidly and will quickly expand their infestation once inside your home, making preventative measures critical in preventing rodents.

Spiders: Spiders are creepy pests that many people fear. However, they are overall benign and even beneficial to humans because they eat other, more damaging insects that wander into our homes. Like many fall and winter pests, spiders are more prominent during these seasons because they are looking for shelter during the colder months. Texas is home to two dangerous types of spiders: the black widow and the brown recluse spider. Both of these spiders have bites that are medically dangerous to humans and can require medical attention.
