When it comes to pests, prevention is always your best bet and is easier than treatment. Unfortunately, Kansas is home to many pests, many of which only come out during certain seasons.

So, if you live in Wichita, Kansas, what pests should you be on the lookout for during each season?

Spring

Clover mites: Clover mites are small, red bugs that are nearly undetectable with the naked eye. They are most active in the spring because they feed on plants and grass. Unfortunately, it’s challenging to prevent clover mites from entering your home because of their small size. They do not damage the home or bite humans. However, they are detrimental to your yard and garden.

Termites: Eastern subterranean termites are the most common termite species in Kansas. They create extensive, underground colonies that can cause massive damage to your property. Termites destroy wood and will not stop eating away at wood until there is nothing else to consume. Common signs of termites include molted skin, feces, damaged wood, and mud tubes.

June beetles: Green June beetles are common in Wichita, Kansas, especially during the warm spring and summer months.

June beetles are primarily active during the day. They can typically be found near fruit. While June beetles are not damaging to humans, they can be immensely destructive in our yard, especially when it comes to our yards and trees.

Summer

Ticks: Ticks are dangerous to humans because of their bites which can transmit dangerous diseases like Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme disease. These diseases can also be transferred to our pets, so regular tick checks are vital. Keeping your yard trimmed and tall grass cut are two steps that can help you to avoid ticks on your property.

Mosquitoes: Mosquitoes may be the most despised summer pest due to their irritating bites. Mosquitoes can often be found near standing water, where they prefer to breed. If you have standing water on your property, mosquito treatments can be especially effective in reducing the number of mosquitoes on your property.

Fleas: Fleas cannot survive in freezing temperatures. Once the weather warms up, fleas will begin to emerge again. In particular, fleas can be a serious pest to our pets because they feed on animal blood. If you live in the Wichita area, flea prevention products are an essential resource for protecting your pets and home from flea infestation. Regular flea examination on your pets is another important preventative measure.

Fall/Winter

Wildlife: Kansas is home to many wildlife pests, including woodrats, gray squirrels, fox squirrels, deer mice, pocket gophers, and prairie dogs. Wildlife is a hazardous type of pest because they can carry and transmit dangerous diseases, such as rabies. In addition, wildlife pests are also particularly destructive and can destroy parts of your home, trees, garden, and more. Wildlife can also be dangerous to your pets if they are loose in the backyard, as wildlife will fight back if they feel threatened by your pets.

Spiders: Spiders are creepy pests that many people fear due to their unpleasant appearance and bites. However, spider bites are not usually harmful to humans. The exception to this is the dangerous brown recluse spider and black widow spider. Both of these spiders can cause severe medical harm to humans with their venomous bites. Most humans will recover with treatment, but children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems are at a heightened risk if they are bitten. In addition to these, Kansas has various spider species, including jumping spiders, crab spiders, wolf spiders, pirate spiders, and lynx spiders.

Rodents: Rodents are among the most challenging pests to rid yourself of. Rodents breed incredibly quickly and can break into our homes through tiny entry points.

Once inside, rodents will look for food and begin making themselves at home, which often includes chewing holes in our walls, contaminating our food, and chewing our wiring, which can create a dangerous fire hazard. Rodents pose many dangers to our homes and can be challenging to get rid of. If you have rodents, reach out to a pest control professional immediately.
