Arkansas is called the natural state for a reason. The vast wilderness, lakes, and rivers lend themselves to one of the most scenic states, especially in the region around Little Rock. However, with its natural beauty comes a whole host of unwanted pests.

In this helpful guide, we’ll show you:

  • The five worst pests in order of difficulty in Little Rock
  • How to identify each type
  • Why these creatures are so hard to get rid of
  • Methods the pros use to treat each one

#5. Paper Wasps

Wasps represent a wide range of flying insects that are neither bees or ants. The paper wasp, on the other hand, is distinctive in the way it constructs its nests. It typically uses a mix of dead wood, plant stems, and saliva to build a paper-like structure.

Although these creatures are mostly docile, they will sting if you get too close to them. So, it can become a problem when they build their nests under porches, overhangs, or openings around your home.

Like all stinging insects, paper wasps carry venom that will cause an allergic reaction for some people when stung. So, for that reason, it’s best to control them around households with those vulnerable to bee stings.

Professional exterminators typically use a powerful aerosol to eradicate nesting sites quickly. However, when wasps invade the inside of your home, more advanced measures may be necessary.

#4. Mice

The ordinary house mouse is one of the worst pests to get rid of due to its ability to breed at an alarming pace. Females have from five to eight pups in a single litter and have up to 10 litters per year.

Adult mice are between five and seven inches long, are mostly grayish brown, and have large ears compared to their heads. However, they should not be confused with juvenile roof rats, which are similar in appearance.

Mice invade homes, especially during the cooler winter months. They typically nest near food and water sources. In addition, they transmit diseases and cause widespread food contamination.

Pest control providers get rid of mice from your home using a wide range of techniques, including:

  • Trapping with kill traps
  • Strategic baiting for larger infestations
  • Mechanical exclusion measures to seal out rodents
  • Sanitation recommendations to prevent future infestations

#3. Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are tiny, reddish-brown insects that feed on human blood for survival. They are carried by people into living spaces via luggage, clothing bags, and used furniture items.

Bed bugs infest areas where humans are present. These locations include houses, apartments, and hotels. Additionally, they can make their presence felt in schools, hospitals, and assisted living facilities.

Bed bugs are on the rise in the U.S. That’s because they are transported from other countries by people traveling abroad. This increase in international travel is what scientists believe causes the bed bug’s widespread distribution.

Unfortunately, people living with this biting pest sometimes have trouble eradicating them from their homes. So, it’s best to hire a professional in most cases that will utilize the following techniques:

  • Thorough inspection and monitoring
  • Targeted treatments with quick knockdown sprays
  • Residual insecticides for long-term results
  • Heat treatments where appropriate

#2. Formosan Termites

The Formosan subterranean termite is a non-native species to the Little Rock area. That’s because it was introduced to the U.S. from Taiwan and Southern China around the early 1960s.

Formosan termite colonies often contain millions of workers, making them one of the most destructive pests in the U.S. They construct massive galleries in structures such as houses, commercial buildings, and wooden sheds.

Look for winged reproductive termites to swarm from April to July. You can usually find them around windows, light fixtures, and during the evenings hovering around well-lit parking lots.

Due to the complexity of the species, only licensed pest control technicians should attempt to treat Formosan termites. In most cases, this includes digging a trench around the home and filling it with an approved termiticide.

#1. Mosquitoes

By far, the hardest pest to control in Little Rock is the mosquito. That’s because you never get rid of it. But it’s possible to manage this biting menace and reduce its impact on you and your family.

First, limiting breeding areas such as old tires and other items that can quickly fill with water is vital. Also, keeping the weeds to a minimum and your grass cut short will help.
However, one of the most innovative developments in recent years for mosquito control is the availability of microbial insecticides to the public. Also called “mosquito dunks,” these nontoxic compounds disrupt the mosquito’s larval stage, thereby limiting reproduction.
