It’s an unfortunate fact of life that pests are everywhere. No matter where you live, you will have some kind of pests in the area that will find a way onto your property.

So, if you live in Columbus, Georgia, what are the most difficult pests to get rid of? Today, we’re going to break down the most common, difficult pests in the Columbus area

Why Are Some Pests More Difficult to Get Rid of Than Others?

Before we go over the most challenging pests, let’s discuss a few factors that make these pests especially difficult to get rid of.

One factor that dramatically impacts how difficult a pest is to kill is where the pest resides in your home. If they live in the walls, attic, or basement, they will be more difficult to eradicate than a pest that wanders around in plain sight. For example, cockroaches are known for being particularly elusive because they hide in the walls and under appliances.

Another important factor is how fast a pest can breed. For example, rodents are estimated to produce and create up to 2,000 babies in a single year. A pest that can rapidly breed is a pest that is more challenging to eradicate because a pest’s children will continue the cycle and expand the infestation.

Lastly, the size of a pest can make a difference in how difficult they are to eradicate. Pests that are small and difficult to see have a natural advantage in invading our homes and expanding the infestation unnoticed.

Here are a few of the most challenging pests to get rid of in Columbus, Georgia:

Ants

Georgia is home to various ants, including fire ants, crazy ants, pharaoh ants, carpenter ants, Argentine ants, and pavement ants.

Ants are difficult to eliminate because they live in and create huge colonies, consisting of hundreds of thousands of individual ants. This large number of ants makes them challenging to deal with. Another challenge is that ants will quickly return to their safe haven when they are disturbed. While you can kill visible ants, there will likely be many more on your property that are not visible to you.

Unfortunately, certain ants, like fire ants, also present a health hazard. Fire ants are infamous for their painful bites. In fact, their bites are so painful that they can cause an allergic reaction or painful rash, which may require medical attention.

Cockroaches

Nobody wants to deal with a cockroach problem. Not only are cockroaches unpleasant to look at, but they are bacteria spreading and can cause food contamination problems in your home.

Cockroaches are tough to eradicate for a handful of reasons. For starters, cockroaches live in hard-to-reach places, such as under appliances and in the walls. This makes killing cockroaches with pesticides more difficult.

Cockroaches are also resilient pests that can thrive in many environments and on a variety of food sources. On top of this, cockroaches can withstand huge amounts of pressure, so stepping on them will usually not kill them.

Termites

Known as the “silent killers,” termites are just that — silent. Termites invade homes and can be there for months before the homeowner notices the signs.

Typical signs of termites include molted skin, feces, damaged wood, and mud tubes. Subterranean termites are common in the Georgia area, especially during the summer months, which provides moisture and humidity that termites require.

Subterranean termites create extensive colonies underground, where they build mud tubes that allow the termites to travel to and from the surface for food. Once in your home, termites will continue eating away at wood until there is no wood for them to consume.
