No matter where you live, pests will live nearby and make your home their home if the opportunity presents itself. On top of this, each area of the country has its own unique pest problems.

Today, we will go over some of the most common and complex pests in the Detroit area

Why Are Some Pests More Difficult to Get Rid of Than Others?

There are many reasons why pests can be challenging to get rid of.

One of the most significant reasons is breeding. If a pest can rapidly breed, it will make it more challenging to eradicate. Rodents are especially difficult to eliminate because they can reproduce incredibly quickly.

Some sources even estimate that brown rats can have up to 2,000 babies in one year. Other pests, such as bed bugs, can lay hundreds of eggs in their lifetime, making them challenging to eliminate. Even if you kill the active bugs, you may have eggs in your home that need to be destroyed because they may still hatch months later.

Another factor that makes pests challenging to get rid of is where they live in your home. Pests that live within our walls or wood paneling may be more difficult to eliminate simply because it’s harder to get to them.

Some pests, such as bed bugs, are so tiny that they are tough to see with the naked eye, making them difficult to detect in the first place.

Here are a few of the most challenging pests to get rid of in Detroit, Michigan:

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to eradicate for a variety of reasons. For starters, bed bugs are tiny and nocturnal, making it unlikely that you will spot them scurrying around. They can go months between meals and will live within your mattress or furniture until they come out to feed on human blood at night. Signs of bed bugs include waking up with new bug bites in the morning, spots of blood on your sheets, and bites in a line on your body. If you believe you have bed bugs, it’s vital that you reach out to an exterminator quickly, as bed bugs are among the most challenging pests to eradicate.

Moles and Rodents

Michigan is home to many rodents, including common mice, meadow jumping mice, brown rats, shrews, voles, and chipmunks. Many of these rodents will seek shelter in your home during the colder months. Unfortunately, rodents thrive in urban environments and anywhere that humans live. They can eat a variety of foods and sustain themselves on our trash. Rodents are also dangerous to our health because they can carry disease, which they can spread to us through bites or, more frequently, food contamination.

Wildlife

Wildlife is abundant in Michigan, and many wildlife animals are more than happy to make our home their home. Whether this is birds making our roofs their home or opportunistic opossums who will raid your home and trash cans for food. Wildlife can be beautiful from afar, but make no mistake — these critters will fight, bite, and scratch back.

Even if they appear to be dead, do not approach them as many play dead. Wildlife frequently carries disease, which is another reason that professional help is strongly recommended.

Termites

Termites are known as the “silent killers” because they silently eat away at the wood in our homes, often unnoticed. Eastern Subterranean termites are the most common type of termite in the Detroit area. They create extensive tunnel systems underground, which they use to travel to the surface for food. They favor humid, warm areas with plenty of access to wood. To prevent termites, it’s vital that you treat wooden flooring to avoid rotting and repair leaks immediately to prevent condensation.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are one of the most disliked pests out there due to their unpleasant, disgusting looks. Cockroaches can adapt to nearly any environment and are attracted to crumbs, things stacked on the ground, and dust. Michigan is home to the notorious German, American, Oriental, Brown-Banded, and Wood cockroaches. To help prevent cockroaches, keep your trash sealed and your home organized and clean.
