Dallas, Texas, has some of the worst pests in the country. So, it’s essential to recognize if you have any of them early on. Here, you’ll discover:

  • The top five most challenging pests to get rid of in Dallas
  • Possible health risks of each
  • How to identify them
  • Secrets the top pest control companies use to eliminate these unwanted pests

#5. Roof Rats

Roof rats prefer nut and fruit trees due to the abundance of readily available food. They also climb high places to get away from predators.

Here are some ways to identify roof rats around your home:

  • Thin, narrow body
  • Dark gray
  • Droppings are tapered at one end, and squared off at the other
  • Large black eyes
  • Pointed snout
  • Large ears

Roof rats are disease carriers. Here are a few of the viruses they spread to humans:

  • Rat-bite fever
  • Salmonella
  • Leptospirosis

These are some tips for getting rid of roof rats:

  1. Remove excess trash
  2. Seal food storage containers tightly
  3. Utilize snap traps baited with peanut butter or dried prunes
  4. Place bait stations around the outside of the home to draw rodents away
  5. Seal entry points with steel wool and expansion foam
  6. Cut back tree branches away from your home to prevent rodents and small animals from climbing on your roof

#4. Bed Bugs

The U.S. government completely eradicated bed bugs by the 1950s. However, these nasty little insects have been making a dramatic comeback in recent years, and scientists attribute that to an increase in international travel.

This is how you can tell if you have bed bugs:

  • Tiny, reddish-brown insects, about four millimeters long
  • Skin moltings from instars
  • Black spots on sheets
  • Reddish spots where their human host has squashed bed bugs

Bed bugs do not transmit disease. However, their bites can cause large welts on the skin.

These are the preferred techniques exterminators use when eliminating bed bugs:

  1. High temperature treatments using specialized bed bug heaters
  2. Knockdown sprays to kill adult bed bugs fast
  3. Insect growth regulators to disrupt the bed bug’s life cycle
  4. Earth-based insecticides for long-term control

#3. Pigeons

Pigeons are a non-native species to the U.S. They were brought here from Europe in the 1800s, and they have become a widespread pest ever since.

These are some of the pigeon’s primary features:

  • Pear-shaped body
  • Dark gray color
  • Males have a turquoise band under the neck
  • They bob their head when they walk

The pigeon’s favorite roosting spots are:

  • Rafters
  • Window sills
  • Roof peaks
  • Eaves
  • Ledges

Pigeons do not infect humans with any diseases. However, some people can get extremely ill from breathing the dust from pigeon excrement.

Pest control experts use the following techniques to get rid of pigeons:

  1. Eliminate all food sources, including bird food and loose trash
  2. Install metal spike strips to keep pigeons from roosting on buildings
  3. Screen entry points into houses
  4. As a last option, exterminators will sometimes use a special bait that disorients birds but won’t kill them

#2. German Cockroaches

The German cockroach is also called the kitchen roach, and it’s the last insect you want to have loose in your home. That’s because one mating pair can reproduce thousands in a short time.

Here’s how to identify German cockroaches:

  • They are usually about ¾ inch long
  • They have a golden-brown color
  • Look for two black stripes behind the head of adults
  • Eggs sacs are dropped by the females and are pill-shaped

Cockroaches don’t generally transmit diseases to humans. However, you could pick up the salmonella virus from eating food contaminated by cockroach feces.

Take these steps to eliminate German roaches from your kitchen:

  1. Vacuum live roaches, fecal matter, and egg sacs using a shop vac
  2. Wipe the area clean with bleach and water
  3. Apply bait gels to cracks and crevices
  4. Use solid bait stations for long-term control

#1. Mice

Mice are the most difficult pest to control in Dallas. That’s because they are so resilient, and they reproduce at an alarming rate.

Here’s how to tell mice from rats:

  • Grayish brown
  • Tiny compared to a roof rat
  • Small eyes
  • Droppings are smaller than that of the rat and tapered at both ends

Mice are disease carriers. Here are some common illnesses passed on to humans :

  • Leptospirosis
  • Hemorrhagic fever
  • Lymphocytic Chorio-meningitis (LCM)
  • Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS)

Get rid of mice this way:

  1. Keep pet food in sealed containers
  2. Use glue boards to trap live mice
  3. Seal pipe entry points
  4. Use rodent baits for long-term control
  5. Keep trash and food away from foraging mice
