Your yard should be a place that you feel at home and comfortable in. If you’re dealing with pests in your yard in Houston, it can ruin your tranquility and enjoyment.

All kinds of pests are attracted to the plants and climate of your yard. Some of the most common include, but are not limited to:

  • Mosquitoes
  • Rodents
  • Flies
  • Bees
  • Wasps

Fortunately, there are ways to prepare your yard to make it less hospitable to unwanted pests. By knowing how you can keep your yard safe and comfortable, you can enjoy it much more.

Remove Standing Water

Mosquitoes and gnats are highly attracted to standing water and use it to lay eggs. If your yard has many places where water accumulates, it can quickly become a breeding ground. Removing standing water is one of the best ways to reduce the number of bugs in your yard.

If you have many planters or potted plants, these can trap a lot of excess water. Drill holes in the bottom of any buckets or planters so water can easily drain out after rainfall. This will help limit the amount of places where insects can lay their eggs.

Trim Vegetation

If you have many plants or trees in your yard, make sure to keep them trimmed back as much as possible. Overgrown plants are a perfect place for pests to create nests and breeding grounds. Trees and shrubs that have become too full can be great hiding places for rodents and other wildlife.

Trimming your vegetation will also create less debris that can fall into your yard and rot. Rotting vegetation is food for many different types of insects and will attract them to your yard. Keeping foliage up off the ground will help keep them away.

Relocate Your Compost Bin

If you keep a compost bin, make sure it is covered and as far away from your yard as you can get it. Pests love compost bins since they are rich in nutrients and contain a lot of the materials they need to survive.

Keeping your compost bin sealed up can force pests to look elsewhere for their food. If you have to keep it in your yard, make sure it is emptied and cleaned regularly. Pests will always be around, but there is no reason to feed them.

Clean Your Gutters

Your gutters are meant to catch water, but they will almost certainly catch other things like leaves and twigs as well. When this happens, they can get clogged and hold standing water. This is a perfect habitat for gnats, flies, and mosquitoes and should be removed as soon as possible.

The debris itself also contributes to the life cycle of pests. Insects that live off rotting vegetation will be sure to find the nutrients they need in clogged gutters. Plus, as the vegetation rots, it lets off heat, making them even more ideal for pests.

Get Professional Help for Pests in Your Yard

If you want to keep your yard pest-free, a professional exterminator in Houston can help. Not only will they know where to look for problem areas, but they will also know how to eliminate them and keep pests away for good.

Getting pests out of your yard will give you the freedom to enjoy it more. It will also keep those pests from getting inside your house and causing more issues.
