Pests can strike anywhere, and Sacramento is unfortunately not safe from the adverse effects of pests. Our yards are typically peaceful places where we can relax after a long day of work. Unfortunately, pests can quickly ruin this peace when they invade our yards, spreading the infestation until it’s taken over. In addition to this, some pests are also a threat to your family’s health and safety if they’re not treated.

In this guide, we’ll tackle the following topics:

  • Pest Identification
  • Identifying Common Sacramento Yard Pests
  • Pest Prevention

Pest Identification

Before you begin squashing any and all bugs in sight, it’s essential to take a moment to identify what kind of bugs and pests you have in your yard. In all actuality, most pests in our yards are not harmful. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates that only five to fifteen percent of pests in the garden are detrimental to your plants.

Many pests are actually helpful, such as spiders and scorpions, which eat other much more harmful pests that may wander into your yard. Other pests, like bees, pollinate plants and are crucial to the environment.

So, before you begin treating any pests in your yard, take a moment to identify which pests are harming your yard and need to be dealt with.

Common Sacramento Yard Pests

Aphids

Aphids are small, typically green bugs that are highly destructive to our beloved plants. Their calling card is a “lacey” chewed pattern on the leaves of your plants. Aphids typically go after newer plants and can quickly kill them off by depleting them of essential nutrients.

Like many sucking insects, they produce a sticky substance called honeydew. Unfortunately, honeydew attracts other pests to your yard, such as flies and even wildlife. This presents a problem because wildlife and flies can present a serious health hazard to you, your family, and your pets.

Scale Bugs

Scale insects are disc-shaped bugs that attach themselves to our plants. Once connected to the plant, they create a scaly effect on your plant. Like aphids, they also leave behind a honeydew residue which can attract other insects and wildlife, resulting in a more significant pest problem.

Spider Mites

As their name suggests, spider mites create small, subtle webs on plants. Unlike spiders, spider mites’ webbing is much smaller and will require a close look at your plants as it won’t be immediately apparent. In addition, the effects of spider mites create a “stippling” effect on the plant, resulting from the feeding damage.

Pest Prevention

Prevention is always easier and more effective than treatment. So, what steps can you take to prevent pests from breaching and infesting your yard?

Here are our top pest prevention tips:

  • Clear out nesting materials, such as wood, paper, and cardboard, from your yard to prevent pests from building nests
  • Plant hardy, pest-resistant plants
  • Plant a variety of plants to avoid any one crop or plant being wiped out by a specific type of pest
  • Use citronella candles to repel mosquitoes and other insects from your yard
  • Keep your fences in good repair to block larger pests from entering your garden
  • Immediately pull any dead plants or weeds
  • Trim tall grass and overgrown plants to avoid pest-friendly areas developing in your yard
  • Remove fallen fruits and nuts from your yard
  • Don’t spread birdseed on the ground as this may attract pests. Instead, use a bird feeder to keep it to just the birds eating the birdseed
  • Treat any pest infestations quickly because many pests will attract other pests to your yard
  • Secure all garbage cans and empty them frequently
  • Check your shed and home for any entry points and use a caulking product to seal off entry points

If you notice pests in your yard, don’t hesitate to reach out to your local Sacramento pest control provider. Pest problems almost always worsen if left unchecked, so the sooner you get help, the better.
