Nowhere is safe from pests. Unfortunately, Denver is no exception and is home to many types of hazardous pests that will destroy your yard.

If you have pests in your yard or are looking to learn more about pest prevention techniques and what pests you may find in the Denver area, continue reading for more information.

In this guide, we will cover all this and more:

  • Pest Identification
  • Identifying Common Denver Yard Pests
  • Pest Prevention

Pest Identification

Before you start killing all pests in sight, take a moment to identify which pests are actually harming your yard.

The majority of pests in your yard are beneficial and can even eat other pests that harm your yard. For example, scorpions and spiders eat other insects that will destroy your plants. Other pests, like bees, pollinate plants which are crucial for their survival and reproduction.

As a result, you must identify which pests in your yard you should target and treat for. To help you out, we’ve compiled the following list featuring some of the worst yard pests in Denver.

Common Yard Pests in Denver

Grasshopper

Grasshoppers are highly common throughout Colorado, especially during drought conditions. Drought conditions are ideal for grasshoppers, and they tend to lay more eggs during this time.

Unfortunately, grasshoppers are incredibly aggravating for gardeners because they love leafy vegetables and are excellent at migrating from yard to yard. Unfortunately, if your neighbors don’t also treat grasshoppers, it can be challenging to control them in your own yard due to their migration abilities.

Grasshoppers are also prone to damaging citrus foliage, grapevines, roses, and fruit. The more grasshoppers you have in your garden, the more likely it is that the grasshoppers will move onto other plants in your yard.

Japanese Beetles

Japanese beetles are a bane to yard owners everywhere, primarily because of their offspring: white grubs. White grubs are even more damaging than their adult counterparts because they eat grass roots, causing dead grass. Japanese beetles eat plants above ground and are known for “skeletonizing” leaves by eating the soft part of the plant around the veins.

Common signs of grubs include dying grass, seeing white grubs, and patches of dead grass. Japanese beetles are metallic green beetles that you may notice on your plants and the destroyed parts of your plants around the veins.

Whiteflies

Whiteflies are very common in the Denver area. They are sap-sucking flies that will target both indoor and outdoor plants. Common signs of whiteflies include white specks on the underside of your plant’s leaves.

Your indoor plants are at risk from whiteflies year-round. However, whiteflies cannot survive in cold weather and will freeze during the rough Denver winters.

Pest Prevention

Prevention is always easier and better than treatment.

So, if you’re looking for ways to prevent yard pests, check out the following tips:

  • Clear any nesting materials from your yard, including paper, cardboard, garbage, and wood.
  • Treat for pest infestations immediately to prevent other pests from being attracted to these infestations as a potential food source.
  • Plant a large variety of plants
  • Choose hardy, pest-resistant plants that will hold up against more pests
  • Use insect repellent when outside to prevent pests from taking a bite out of you
  • Secure your shed or garage with a caulking material to prevent rodents and other pests from breaking into these buildings and using them as shelter
  • Treat standing water with mosquito repellent products to prevent mosquitoes from breeding and collecting on your property
  • Secure your garbage cans and empty them regularly to prevent pests from entering the cans for a food source or shelter
  • Pick up any fallen food in your backyard, such as nuts or fruit, to eliminate a potential food source for pests
  • Trim tall grass and overgrown plants to prevent pest-friendly areas from forming in your yard
  • Don’t scatter birdseed on the ground. Instead, use a bird feeder to avoid other pests from using the birdseed as a food source

If you have pests in your yard, don’t hesitate to reach out to a Denver pest control professional for help in dealing with your problem effectively.
