Wildlife pests such as moles, starlings, and squirrels make a mess in your yard by digging holes, stealing bird food, and leaving their waste products in plain sight. So, how do you keep these unwanted guests away before they create even more damage?

Keep reading, because we’re about to show you:

  • How to identify the various yard pests in Baltimore
  • The sanitation measures to use
  • How to trap rodents and wildlife pests
  • When to use poison baits
  • How the pros keep pest birds like starlings away

How To Keep Moles Out of Your Yard

Moles are small rodents that measure between four and six inches and have cylindrical bodies. They create tunnels far beneath the soil surface. But the most noticeable damage is the surface-feeding burrows that appear as ridges on your lawn or garden.

Several methods are available for eliminating moles from your yard. Below are the most common ones.

Kill Traps

Live trapping for moles is impractical and yields limited results. For that reason, the most widely used method involves humane kill traps.

The professional’s choice is the scissor trap. That’s because it tends to be the easiest and most effective to use for the majority of cases.

To set, simply place it down into the tunnel (run), where the mole travels as it searches for food. Then, push it down with your foot until the spring is loaded and remains locked into place. Once the trap senses the vibration of the mole, it triggers, instantly dispatching the animal.

Poison Baits

Poison bait formulations for moles come in a wide variety of attractants. However, the best typically use a fish flavor that mimics the look and feel of either grubs or earthworms.

They’re also available in a granular form that holds up to wet weather conditions. But whichever bait you use, it’s vital to read the label directions carefully before applying.

Exclusion Measures

Use half inch wire mesh to block moles from tunneling near your plants. Make sure that it’s at least two inches below the surface and is above the ground about three inches.

Repellents

Mole repellents come in various essential oils, either as solid granules or as liquid spray formulations. Apply these products around the perimeter of your fence line to discourage moles, squirrels, and wildlife pests.

How To Get Rid of Raccoons

Sanitation Measures for Raccoons

Raccoons eat almost anything, including:

  • Live poultry
  • Eggs from several species, including waterfowl
  • Fruits
  • Grains
  • Vegetables

It’s important to secure all trash cans and food bins so raccoons and other wildlife pests don’t have easy access to food sources.

Trapping Raccoons

Having the correct size animal trap is critical to your success. Utilize ones that are at least 12 inches wide and 32 inches deep. Bait with canned dog food, rotten fruit, or sweet bread.

When releasing the animal, it’s necessary to let it go as close to where you caught it as possible. This will ensure it has an optimal chance for survival afterward.

How To Eliminate Squirrels

Trapping Squirrels

Employ the use of live cage traps measuring at least eight inches wide and 17 inches deep. Bait your trap using a combination of chunky peanut butter mixed with birdseed.

Ensure the squirrel triggers the trap door by placing the bait behind the trip plate for the best results. This will force the animal deep into the trap while keeping it from stealing the bait.

Squirrel Exclusion and Repellents

Installing squirrel baffles on all bird feeders ensures they can’t climb the poles to access the food. These devices fit around the posts and prevent squirrels from climbing them.

Repellents also work occasionally for squirrels. However, you have to be sure to apply a generous amount. Otherwise, the animal may not be able to smell it.

How To Keep Starlings off Your House

Starlings are slightly smaller birds than crows, black in color, and typically have a purple hue to their wings.

They fly in swarms of thousands and roost in trees, on buildings, or anywhere they can find a suitable resting place.

Since starlings are so loud, they become pests, especially in urban areas like Baltimore.

Bird Netting

Starlings roost anywhere there’s a ledge or available tree branch. For that reason, bird netting is a viable option especially useful for tree saplings and other vulnerable plantings.

Mechanical Repellents

Install bird spikes on roofs, ledges, and overhangs. This method has the added benefit of repelling other types of wildlife as well.
